How the INTERCOOLER almost killed my 360 (PICS)

I bought my XBOX360 in March.  Been playing it a lot, and usually have no problems.  Bought a NYCO INTERCOOLER for it after hearing how much they helped.

True, it did help keep it cooler..... Noticably so, but I started having probs not long after with the FANS not running right.  They would occasionally "grind" and make odd nopises to where I'd just turn them off sometimes.  This stopped a few months ago, and all was well........

Then, I got the "3 red lights of doom"  Only happened briefly, and I was able to restart without any issues.

Then, the 3 red lights became more frequent, usually a jiggle to the main power would take care of it and I could get more gaming in....  Until last week, when the 360 went poof....  3 red lights, no rebooting helped at all.  So, I sent in for my return tag from Circuit City (I got the 3 year warranty) and they instructed me to pack it up, and send it back for a new one.

As I disassemble it, I pulled off the INTERCOOLER and noticed it wass BURNED.  Yes, BURNED on the connectors...  So thinkiing THIS may be the issue, I removed the intercooler, took some alcolhol and cleaned the XBOX contacts, and put it all back together (minus the intercooler of course) and have had ZERO problems....

I think I'll be contacting NYCO with this issue, as this could have been much worse.  It could have seriously damamged my console, or perhaps even started a fire.

So if you have an INTERCOOLER, I suggest taking it off, and examining it for burns/shorts etc........

Those Intercoolers do not fit exactly tight, so the connections would arc I'm assuming.  Thanks for the info, I need to check mine.  They could have made those things fit a little better.

Yeah, it did move around a bit in the socket.....The weight of the power plug always pulled it downwards too.

I'll e-mail these pics to Nyco, see if they respond..............

If you notice, the origional power supply plug is metal, the Nyko is plastic. In addition, you really do NOT need any of these "cooling devices" IF your 360 is defect-free.

I agree with you that you do not have to have one. At least for me in my situation I wouldn't need one because I don't play for way too long. But it would be smart to get it if you have a lot of 8 hour gaming sessions. Especially when trying to unlock the 8 hour online gaming achievement on GRAW. But who is that much of a geek they have 8 hours to play a game. All online.  would only be able to do that if I had 8 friends over and we took turns.

Even if the unit gets a little hot here and there, a computer's parts will eventually give in to the heat and die.  It may be weeks or years, but it will.  It just makes sense to go ahead an make it cooler.  I work for a phone company and our cards in our equipment can do the same.

I'll be checking my Intercooler frequently now, either that or take it off.

That could've seriously caused a fire. Nice thinking when you decided to take off the intercooler. This is definitely a no-no for the intercooler. I don't think many people will think of buying the intercooler after seeing those pictures.

Re: How the INTERCOOLER almost killed my 360 (PICS)

Wow great thread. Yeah, I was a little concerned with the way the intercooler recepacle worked. I have gotten the 3 red lights of doom a few times which I am almost certain are due to the loose connection caused by the intercooler. I may very well take it off now after viewing this thread.

In the meantime keep up the good work.

knock on wood, i have had no adverse reactions to implementing the intercooler to my 360 and neither has my buddy who bought his the same day i did. we've been running them for months now and all i can say is the 360 is running a lot cooler than it was before. the damn thing is really loud though on top of the noise level of the 360 itself. however i turn my intercooler on after about 45m to an hour so maybe that has something to do with no problems with it, but my buddy never cuts his on and off and his 360 works fine... who knows???Confused [8-)]

Just a question, is it normal for your intercooler to make really screwed up sounds like the fan is scraping or something? Because mine does and it's been worrying me.

dude, cut the intercooler off immediately and listen to your 360, if it sounds good and normal your intercooler is fu*ked and has got to go. all the intercooler sounds like if its healthy is about 3 times as much fan noise as the 360 itself. BEWARE!Devil [6]
