Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
I put in Oblivion and my disc drive made a crunchy buzzing sound. I tried a different disc (2k all pro football) and that worked without the sound. The next time I tried football it made the sound, but eventually it stopped and the game played fine. (It seemed the initial disc read and load made the sound) Now nothing works. It makes the sound as it attempts to read the disc, then says it is not readable. My warranty ending on 11/30/07. I have not decided what to do yet. (repair through MS or sell, or ??)

Got it today. Tried to play a game of Halo, unplayable disc. I have been trying to get a new 360 for a couple of weeks now, and I should have on Saturday.

Mine started getting the red rings a few months ago, every now and again, and it was an easy temp fix. just stand the box if it way lying, or lie it (or lay it. im no grammar fiend), if it was standing. i wish i'd have sent it in when i got the rings. cause once i got past this, a few months later, the drive stopped reading discs and i paid $100 to MS to have it fixed. sent it out 3 weeks ago and my box should be arriving this week.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

My elite - purchased Sept. 07 - started out having problems a couple weeks ago with unplayable disks, usually fixed after opening/closing the drive, but just crapped out on me 2/7/08.  Just can't understand anything dying due to disk drive error nowadays.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
Microsoft needs to extend the warranty to cover this problem just like they did with the RROD. I'm a member of this club, but luckily mine works after opening/closing, turning off/on. I won't pay $100 unless I absolutely have to, and by that time perhaps it will be more cost effective to buy a new one.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

This what happen to my friend he's my neighbor. His dvd rom drive was making noise and not reading games... So me and him to 360 apart, and took the dvd rom apart. I hit the dvd rom with my fist couple of times the game WORKED!!! but then it stoped again... so like you know the metal case dvd rom in? on top it has this liltle circle thing that soppose to hold the disc form top. On top of that metal ther eis metal circle glued on i took that off  got the little circle thingy out. Rember system is still opened i se emother board and everything eles. DVD ROM is still opened as well but sits in its place ion 360. I put disc in, and i see it spin ... then it stops(it almost flue out lol very very dengeraous!) then i took lil circle thingy, when disc drive close i quicklly put it on the center of disc and it had the lectric megnetation and then it holds disc in place, and my frind is abale to play the 360. He never put 360 bak together its opened and he see's all inside, he can touch the disc while it speens and everything is hanging. (hard drive wireless adapt...)

I WILL TAPE IN ON CAM, AND WILL POST ON YOUTUBE, THEN ILL PUT LINK HERE SO YOU GUYS CAN SEE WHATS GOING ON. its prety cool.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

I have had pretty much the same problem.  Over the last couple of weeks my disc drive kept chucking the disc out mid game, and made a weird whirring/clunking noise.  The ring would flash, only green mind,  and sometimes the disc tray would stay open or part shut then open.  Decided to call MS and they have now taken it away for repair, luckily still in the warranty.  Would advise getting it repaired sooner rather than later especially if you have no idea when your warranty runs out.

Also my own 360 which was replaced last august had its dvd drive replaced. Man this console is a joke.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

What a depressing thread. Sad [:(]

I already had a 360 with a defective drive, which actually CRACKED a $60 dollar copy of Skate before the 360 got RROD (this 360 was vertical).

My replacement (this one horizontal) was working fine, very quiet DVD drive, until I was playing Crackdown one evening. All of the sudden it started making loud noises... almost like it was skipping or something. It never locked up on me, but I did turn it off about 10 minutes after the noises began. I brushed it off as some random thing and thought nothing of it.

Now I have tried 4 different games and the drive always makes this loud skipping sound. No lockups, however. I inspected the DVD drive and noticed the disc tray is now wobbly - like a *** (lol it bleeped out the word s. cre .w) that was holding it rigid came out of something. I distinctly remember feeling how rigid/sturdy my new replacement 360's DVD drive was, because I abolsutely hated my first 360's drive (it used to not open, be wobbly, and make randomly odd noises).

So, my fellow victims of Microsoft's greed, what do you think? I know this replacement is still under warranty, do you think I should call tech support? I don't have any evidence that it will lock up games or scratch discs, but I do not want to risk another $60 game!

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

What I meant to say was that, if I call tech support, will they repair my console? Has anyone had a 360 repair for something like I am experiencing?

I hate calling them because it always takes a half hour to get to talk to someone, and then I have to try and understand some indian person. I hear stories of people getting english-as-their-first-language people, but I always get those poor Indians who really are trying their hardest, but still leaves me going "What did you say?".

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
I've heard that it is better for cooling to leave your console vertical, but better for the disk drive to leave it horizontal.  I keep mine horizontal with dampened spacers underneath for additional stability and ventilation.

Drive will open...

Vertical - Never
Horizontal - 2/3 times

I'm 'this' far from returning it to Sam's Club and getting a PS3.....not b/c I love Sony, but between them keeping my wheel for months on end and my issues w/ the disc drive...grrr....

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
Whenever I close my disc tray, my 360 makes weird noises (but only for the couple of seconds after the disc tray has been closed), and the final noise is always similar to how a phone sounds on vibrate when it's laying on a hard surface (but definitely not as loud). I can't explain it any better than that. I just recently got the thing back from repair in late February and I checked for them to fix the disc tray since it would almost NEVER open on the first push, took 2 or 3 times tops to open the tray. It opens great now and fast, but just makes weird noises in the console when it closes. I don't think it's a big issue...or I hope it's not. And it's worth mentioning I've never had Disc read problems..just problems with the actual tray opening and closing. But like I said, it's been fixed...just makes the noises right after its closed...

Just had my second dvd-drive failure on my second elite. I was in the middle of playing a game and the drive made gnarly grinding noises. Now it wont play discs and most of the time wont even close. Called them tonight and they're gonna send me my coffin.

Looks like I'll be on my 3rd console after alls said and done.... Don't you wish they could have just made a working product in the first place?

My Elite's drive failed less than 4 months after I purchased it. I am waiting for it's return from Texas now. I was told they would e-mail me a tracking number and they didn't.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

Two 360 consoles both have had problems.

1st console would not play Halo 3 but 2nd one would. I called MS to get a coffin and was told I would have to pay $99.00 to get it fixed. Sent it in for repair and got the "same" console back. That really surprised me. Halo 3 worked and I wasn't charged the $99.00.

2nd console is now broken. The disc won't read any games or dvd movies.  Called it in for repair and MSFT support told me to return the console along with the power brick and cord but to keep the HD.  Since this is the 4th time this console has to go back for repairs they say they are going to replace it with a new one. Only time will tell.

I made the initial call on 3/11 but to date haven't gotten the coffin.  Called today to inquire and found out the repair order never went through because my shipping address couldn't be validated.  Luckily, I still had the reference numbers from my previous repair problems.  """" Keep those reference numbers and serial numbers handy. """""

Got a new reference number and the coffin is suppoed to be here in 2 - 3 days.  don't plan on holding my breath though.
