Re: Xbox Forums FAQ

Answers:

General Information:

• Conduct
• Discussions
• Flaming
• Flaming other users is not permitted for any reason. Please refrain from flaming, as it severely degrades the quality of the forums and is grounds for being temporarily denied access to the forums.
• Flame Wars
• Flame Wars are also not permitted, and participation in them is a perfect way to have your access to the forums revoked. Do your best not to participate in one, and if you do come across one please do report it so it can be dealt with promptly.
• Spam
• Spam on these forums is also not permitted. You can find the definition of spam as it applies to these forums in the “Abbreviations and forum lingo” section.
• Bumping
• Bumping is a perfectly acceptable action, but please do ensure that you don’t bump a thread excessively. Once every few hours is the most you should ever bump a thread.
• The Guidelines

The Code of Conduct and Terms of Use are the specific legal documents used for the forums. Posts are usually deleted or edited according to these documents.

• Abbreviations and forum lingo
• What does “bump” mean?
• When new posts are made to a thread that thread is pushed to the top of the forum, and ever other thread below that is slid down one space. Eventually threads are taken off of the first page of the forum, which is where the majority of forum users view threads. When you see a post using only the word “bump” that indicates the post was made for the sole purpose of pushing the thread it was posted in to the top of the forum.
• What does “LOL” mean?
• “Laughing out Loud” or “Laugh out Loud”, it is an expression used to express the person posting thought something was funny although it doesn’t always mean the person posting it actually laughed out loud.
• What does “ROFL” mean?
• “Roll over the floor laughing” or “Rolling over the floor laughing” (among other variants), ”, it is an expression used to express the person posting thought something was funny
• What is a “tag” or “tagging”?
• A “tag” or “tagging” is a post made, usually with the content of “tag”, or something similar, solely for the purpose of adding a post to the posting user’s “My Forums” page. This allows the user very easy access to the post in the future. Although tagging isn’t strictly against the rules, posting “tag” or something to the equivalent frequently could be considered spam. If you legitimately want to “tag” a large number of threads your best course of action would be to add them to your favorites, and possibly tag a small number of posts every so often.
• What is a “newb”?
• A “newb” is someone who is new to something. Since they are new, they don't know much about it, or are very poor at it.
• What is a “n00b”?
• A “n00b” is a newb who claims to know everything there is to know about said subject or that they are the best at it. Unfortunately, some n00bs remain so even after they are no longer newbs.
• What is a “troll”?
• A “troll” is a poster that really serves no purpose than to get a strong negative reaction out of other forum members. Although there are forum members who may seem like they are trolls; that is not always the case. Just because a forum member posts something that others may not agree with does not mean that they are a troll. A troll continually attempts to make other forum members angry. The most important thing to know about a troll is not to “feed” them as trolls usually try to make other forum members angry for amusement, and an easy way to make them quit is not to react. If you see forum members “feeding” trolls please report any such posts to the moderators so the thread can be dealt with accordingly.
• What is a “flame”?
• A flame is a post that is made to attack another forum member, usually based on the content of that post made by that other forum member. Flames are looked down upon, and are most often deleted depending on the severity of the post content. Please refrain from flaming another user, and if you see a flame please do report it.
• What is a “flame war”?
• A flame war is a series of users flaming each other. These are more often than not instigated by trolls, and as such can usually be averted by not participating in them.
• What is “spam”?
• The definition of spam is quite flexible. Basically it is defined as a post made for the sole purpose of boosting one’s Community User Level, although there are kinds of posts that are deemed spam. These include (but are not limited to):
• Posting advertisements
• Posting the same thing multiple times
• Posting excessive white space so the post takes up unnecessary vertical space.
• Posting long character strings that destroy the forum's formatting and requires scrolling horizontally.
• Posting unrelated links
• Posting hoax messages
• Posting a message that has not relevance to the thread it was posted in
• General Questions
• How can I report an offensive post/user or contact the moderators?
• On the bottom-right-hand corner of a post you will see a “Report” link. Just click that link and you will be brought to a post window. All you need to do is include the reason why you think the post should have action taken against it. The user posting, a link to the thread, the thread title, and the post’s content are all included in the report.
• Why was my topic moved?
• It was deemed more appropriate in another forum, and was moved accordingly. Usually this happens when you for example post something about a game in the Xbox Live discussion forum; it would often be moved to the Games Discussion forum or the forum corresponding with that game
• Why was my post edited?
• Posts are usually edited to remove profanity, or remove another part of the post that violates the forum rules. You should take this as a warning, as posts containing violations of the ToU or CoC are usually deleted in their entirety
• Why was my post deleted?
• Posts that violate the ToU or CoC are deleted, as well as in certain situations where a user may accidentally post a thread more than once. However posts may be deleted for any appropriate reason. If you did not get an email explaining why your post was removed you can attempt to private message a moderator or MVP to find out why.
• Why was my post split?
• Splitting a post is taking a post and removing it from a thread, and create another separate thread. Usually a post, and all of its replies, are split when they stray from the intended topic of the thread; but are still appropriate on the forums. If you do not know what splitting is
• Why was my post joined?
• Joining a post will take a thread and add it to the end of another thread. Posts are merged when they are about the same topic, this is usually done to clean up certain forums
• Why was my post locked?
• Posts are locked when the thread is meandering off topic or in certain specific situations when it is best if users are not allowed to reply to the thread any more. For example if a user posts asking information about resetting the parental controls on the Xbox console the thread will be locked to keep somebody from posting away to circumvent it.
• Why is my post not appearing in the Technical Issues forum?
• The Technical Issues forum is moderated in order to ensure all posts abide by the ToU and CoC. A “moderated” forum is one that requires all posts to be reviewed by a moderator before being displayed. Posts may also be moved to other, more appropriate forums rather than being approved in the Technical Issues forum.
• What is being "banned", and how do I avoid it?
• Being banned is having your access from the forums removed. To keep from being banned just follow the ToU and CoC, and do not walk the fine line between following the ToU and CoC and disregarding it.
• Why was I banned?
• A large number of your posts were found to violate the ToU and/or CoC, or you made a severe infraction against the ToU or CoC in one or a few posts.
• Why should I register?
• When you register you are reserving your Gamertag on Xbox Live, that is if you don’t already have one. You are also allowed to post once you have logged in, which allows you to accumulate a good community user level, an amassment of icons, and recognition for being a good poster on the forums.
• Why do I need to login to post?
• Mandatory login allows other users to know who is actually posting, as well as allows moderators, MVPs, and administrators to take any necessary actions against that will actually serve as a punishment to that specific user rather than a broad range of users.
• How do I login?
• On the top right of every page on Xbox.com, and the Xbox.com forums there is a “Sign In” link. Click that, enter your credentials, and click the “Sign In” button. On that page you can also click the “Sign me in automatically” radio button and you will be signed in automatically after pressing the “Sign In” button.
• Why do I get an error saying I can't access the forums due to my age? Will I ever be able to access them?
• Due to some legal ramifications you can’t sign up for a Gamertag (and thusly a forum account) if you are under the age of 18. Once you turn 18 you will be able to access the forums.

Re: Xbox Forums FAQ

Members:

• Icons
• What are icons?
• Icons are little badges that can be awarded to a user in order to signify their positive participation in the forums. You can have up to a maximum of six icons, and they are displayed under the Gamercard in every post.
• How do I get an icon?
• All you need to do to get an icon is contribute positively to the forum community. Moderators and MVPs will take notice and request the icon be added to your user profile accordingly. Keep in mind you will have to help in the specific areas that icons are awarded, as seen in the link for the next question.
• What do the various icons mean?
• You can see the various icons, and what they mean on Xbox.com
• Where are the icons I was promised?
• If you have been promised an icon you shouldn’t have to worry about getting it. For example, the Xbox Ambassador icon is still being issued and the Xbox Live beta icon still hasn’t been given out yet. If you were promised an icon a long time ago, try private messaging a moderator or MVP and they should be able to get to the bottom of it for you.
• User Rankings
• What is the Community User Level?
• The Community User Level (CUL) of a user is another way to signify a user’s participation in the forums. The various number levels are used to attribute regular users on a scale of 0 to 9 (zero being the lowest, nine being the highest) based on their forum contributions. The initial number given to a new user is 1. Letters are used to signify specific types of users, such as Moderators, MVPs, or Xbox staff.
• How is Community User Level calculated?
• Community User Level is calculated using a variety of different data points stored by the forums. These data points accumulate, and as time goes by and a user continues contributing to the forums they are awarded with a higher Community User Level. Some of the data points are quite easy to guess (such as the total number of posts a user has accumulated), but others can outweigh these obvious data points. Moderators, MVPs, and Xbox staff also have a way to increase a user’s Community User Level (or not always increase the Community User Level, but decrease the amount of time it will take to go to the next level), as well as decrease the Community User Level.
• What do the various uncommon Community User Levels mean?
• M – Forum Moderator
• V – Microsoft Xbox MVP
• X – Xbox Staff
• S – Xbox Support Staff
• J – J Allard’s personal CUL
• C – Xbox.com Contributor
• D – Game developer or publisher
• P – A member of the of the press
• E – E’s personal CUL
• 0 – A level indicating a very bad user, or a user who has been banned
• How do I raise my reputation?
• The reputation displayed under your name in the forums is actually part of your Gamercard. This means that you can only raise your reputation by playing games on Xbox Live, and not receive any negative feedback or have any complaints filed against you. As you continue to progress through games you will find that the stars on your Gamercard will increase the more you play in a manner that keeps other Xbox Live members from avoiding, or reporting you.
• Special Users
• What is a moderator?
• A moderator is a user with special permissions to perform certain administrative actions on the forums. These include deleting, editing, and locking posts as well as banning users. They are also a very good source for information.
• What is an MVP?
• An MVP is empowered with the same abilities as a moderator, but has been awarded the Microsoft Most Valuable Professional award. These people are also a very good source of information.
• What is an administrator?
• An administrator is empowered with absolute control over the forums, including the abilities empowered to moderators and MVPs.
• How do I become a moderator, MVP, or administrator?
• The best way to become a moderator or MVP is to follow the ToU and CoC, as well as be a helpful poster. Current moderators and MVPs will take notice, and recommend you for the position. Becoming an administrator is limited to Xbox staff.
• What are Xbox product group members?
• Xbox product group members are people who actually work at Microsoft, on the Xbox team. They are the people that made Xbox, Xbox Live, and the Xbox 360 what they are today.
• Who is e?
• e is the Xbox Live Operations Manager. He’s the guy in charge of making sure everything about Xbox Live is in working order. He also holds the first gamertag to ever sign up for Xbox Live.

• HiroProtagonist is J. Allard. He was a Corporate Vice President, and was the Chief XNA Architect at Microsoft.

• Gamercards
• What does the color behind a user's name mean?
• This color signifies the user’s Xbox Live subscription status. A gold bar behind the name signifies the user is an Xbox Live Gold Subscriber, where as a silver bar signifies the user is an Xbox Live Silver Subscriber. The people on the Xbox Product Group that actually helped launch the Xbox 360 may also have an “Xbox 360 Launch Team” watermark on that bar.
• What is the picture in a poster's Gamercard?
• This picture is the user’s Gamerpicture, chosen when a user signs up for a Gamertag on Xbox.com, or changes it using the Xbox 360 Guide. If you are signed into Xbox.com with the passport associated with your gamertag you can go to the Profile Management page to choose between some of the original Gamerpictures.
• What does the "Rep" on a user’s Gamercard mean?
• “Rep” signifies a user’s reputation on Xbox Live. When a user is prefered, avoided, or has a complaint filed against them by other users on Xbox Live this will increase or decrease their Rep.
• What does the "G" mean?
• “G” signifies a user’s Gamerscore. This is a cumulative number representing how well a user performs on games online and offline.
• What does the "Zone" of a user mean?
• The “Zone” of a user signifies their Gamerzone. This is something the specific user can change whenever they want, and represents how they prefer to play video games. If you are signed into Xbox.com with the passport associated with your gamertag you can go to the Profile Management page and change your Gamerzone.
• User Preferences and Functions
• What is a signature, and how do I change my signature or create a signature?
• A signature is a string of text appended after every post you make. You can edit it by editing your preferences, or clicking the “Preferences” link on the top right of the screen. After that scroll to the “Signature” section, type your signature, and click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the screen. Your signature will be changed in every post that you make.
• How do I change the time/date format, and time zone to match that of my region?
• Click Here, or click the “Preferences” link on the top right of the screen. Change your time zone, then scroll to the “Site Options” section, change your date format, and click “Saves Changes”. The forums’ time seems to be synchronized with the Windows Time servers, so if you do the same times displayed on the forums will be very accurate.
• What does "Enable Post Mouse-Over Popup" do?
• When you enable this option you can hover over the links to specific threads in every forum view, and it will show an excerpt of the first post in that thread.
• What does "Enable Collapsing Panels" do?
• When you enable this option you can collapse specific forum groups on the Xbox Forum index. It will prevent the content of that group from being loaded entirely, so if you have a slow internet connection this would be an ideal way to increase the load time of the forums index.
• What does "Enable Emoticons" do?
• It should allow you to toggle between viewing emoticons; however, it is currently not functioning properly.
• What is the "Private Email"?
• This is the email address that the forums software will send emails such as private message, forum, or thread notifications.
• What does "Enable Email Notifications of replies to your posts" do?
• This will send you an email whenever a thread you participate in is replied to, generally you shouldn’t enable this as you will likely get a flood of emails. Instead you can enable notifications for a specific thread by clicking the “Notify” button on the top right of the thread.
• What is "My Forums"?
• “My Forums” is a compilation of threads you have participated in. Whenever you participate in a thread it will be added to your “My Forums” list, sorted chronologically with threads having the most recent replies displayed first. Pinned threads will appear at the top of your “My Forums” list.
• How do I change my avatar?
• Your avatar is your Xbox Live Gamerpicture, so you change your avatar in the same way you would change your Gamerpicture

• How do I use "Forum Options"?
• Select any sort of limitations you would like on the threads displayed, and choose either the “Apply” or “Remember” options. Applied settings will only be remembered once you load the page after clicking “Apply”. Click “Remember” to remember the settings, but keep in mind that these are stored in a cookie on your computer and can be reset if temporary files are cleared.
• Private Messages
• What is private messaging?
• Private messaging allows you to create a thread between yourself and one other specific user, with no outside interference from other users.
• How do I send a private message?
• In order to send a private message you will need to find a post by the person you would like to send a message to (you can use the search feature described below to find one), and then click the “PM” link at the bottom right of that post.
• How do I check my private messages?
• Click the “Private Messages” link on the forums index, and click a private message.

Re: Xbox Forums FAQ
• Posting in Forums
• How do I make a thread in a forum?
• To make a thread in a forum click the “Post” button at the top left of the forum view. You will be brought to a screen where you can type the title (the hyperlink that will link to your thread), and the content of the post.
• Once you’re finished typing those click “Preview” to get an idea of what your post will look like, or click “Post” to post your thread to the forum.
• What is an emoticon, and how do I make one?
• An emoticon is a small image placed into a post for the purpose of expressing an emotion towards anybody reading that post.
• To make one you can use the drop down list above the text area for writing your message, once you select one it will automatically add it to the contents of your post.
• Keep in mind you will not see these when previewing your post.
• What is HTML and can I use it?
• HTML is Hypertext Markup Language, which is one of a few types of code that instructs a browser how to assemble a web page.
• Technically you can’t use HTML in posts on the forums; however, you can use UBB code (described below) to do certain types of formatting; such as hyperlinks, bold text, italicized text, and the like. You can also use a certain degree of HTML in signatures.
• What is UBB code and how do I use it?
• UBB code, otherwise known as Universal Bulletin Board code, is a simplified way of performing certain types of formatting on posts.
• UBB code applied to text using the WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor on the forums follows a few rules:
1. You can apply any formatting before writing any text to ensure all text you write follows this formatting
2. Highlighting the last character text in your current text area will cause the rest of the text you type to have that formatting applied to it.
3. You can highlight any specific section of your text to apply applicable formatting to it.
4. It is not case-sensitive
• UBB code on these forums follows that of many other forums, it follows the same formatting with the beginning and ending delimiter of the tags being square brackets. It follows the pattern of [tagname]Formatted Text[/tagname]
• How do I change the color of text?
• Select the “Color” drop down menu from above the posting area to change the color of your posts. You can also highlight the text you wish to change the color of, which will take effect once you click the color you would like to use.
• How do I make text “bold”?
• Press the “B” icon that is above the text area, press and hold the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard and then press the “B” key, or place “” in front of the text you wish to be bolded and place “” behind the text you wish to be bolded.
• How do I make text italicized?
• Press the “I” icon that is above the text area, press and hold the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard and then press the “I” key, or place “” in front of the text you wish to be bolded and place “” behind the text you wish to be bolded.
• How do I underline text?
• Press the “U” icon that is above the text area, press and hold the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard and then press the “U” key, or place “” in front of the text you wish to be bolded and place “” behind the text you wish to be bolded.
• How do I use the indent and outdent features?
• The indent and outdent features on the forum allow you to align text from the left side of the page all the way to the right.
• To increase an indent press the “Tab” key on your keyboard or click the text and click the “Indent” button on the editor.
• To decrease an outdent press the “Shift” key, and while holding it press the “Tab” key. You can also click the “Outdent” button on the editor.
• How do I use lists?
• Lists follows a few specific rules of its own:
1. To increase the indent of a bullet, along with its corresponding text press the “Tab” key on your keyboard or click the text and click the “Indent” button on the editor.
2. To decrease the indent of a bullet, along with its corresponding text press the “Shift” key, and while holding it press the “Tab” key. You can also click the “Outdent” button on the editor.
• How do I use a bulleted list?
• To use a bulleted list click the “Bulleted List” button. Make sure to read how to use the indent and outdent features above.
• How do I use a numbered list?
• To use a numbered list click the “Numbered List” button. Make sure to read how to use the indent and outdent features above.
• How do I make a hyperlink?
• Click the globe icon, with the chain link in front of it. This will prompt you for a URL, and protocol (Usually you want “http:”).
• Type http://your.url.com (for example:  http://forums.xbox.com
• Type Your Link Caption (for example: Xbox Forums Index

2. Press the “A” key
3. Click the eraser icon
• How do I format a signature?
• Signatures use the same rules as formatting of posts in terms of UBB code, except instead of using the square brackets (“[“ and “]”) you use the less and greater than symbols (“<” and “>”). What you’re using here is considered HTML.
• <b>In a signature, this text will appear as bold</b>
• <i>In a signature, this text will appear italicized</i>
• <u>In a signature, this text will appear underlined</u>
• <font color="red”>In a signature, this text will appear as red</font>
• You can change the color of the in the color attribute of the font tag to change the color displayed in the text of the signature. You can also use hex color codes in place of color words.
• Can I delete my own posts?
• No, you can not.
• Can I edit my own posts?
• Yes you can, for a limited amount of time after posting.
• Why were words in my post replaced with "***"?
• Words replaced with “***” are in the forum’s profanity filter. Keep in mind that just because profanity is replaced with “***” does not mean it is ok to use profanity, or “***”. The meaning of the word you would have liked to use is still implied.
• What is the "Preview" button for?
• The “Preview” button allows you to see your post, and all applicable formatting except for emoticons.
• Why don't I see a message I just posted?
• Most internet browsers cache pages, meaning they store a copy of them locally, so you do not need to reload them. Most browsers also allow you to press and hold the “Ctrl” key, and then press the “F5” key to refresh a page without loading any objects from the browser’s cache. Upon completing this procedure in the forum you posted your message in your post should appear.
