Private companies and services are not listed, and it is not a mistake.   Glad the Sucrets worked.

That was never my point. I know it is against the Xbox Live terms of service and I don't curse or scream raciest things over Live or in real life. But my point was that the system for reporting people is obviously broken and with 10,000,000 users it is a difficult task to create a system that works. And I would like to see some of the people complaining in this thread to come up with one that would work. Anyway the best soultion for the time being is to stop complaining and start muting.

i've added a possible solution, i'm not going to retype it in the same thread.  you'll have to read the whole thread to find it.  or you could search the hundreds of other threads on the same subject, i've put my thoughts about a possible solution into words several times and i know others have as well.  i don't like typing things over and over.

i know i probably sound a little rude in saying this but i truely don't intend to sound degrading, but you probably shouldn't show up and tell people to stop complaining and come up with a solution.  especially when the dude you're quoting has a link to a proactive website on the subject, in his signature.  it kinda makes you look a little less....creditable than you otherwise would.  i think that's a nice way of putting it.  try a search and then a little research (that's a really bad pun btw).

That's just the world we live in bud, no one wants to be censored. Sadly, you just gotta let everyone be who they are and attempt to get along with them anyways.
If you feel you cannot then you can always use the feedback system, although, a part of playing with the world is realizing that it's not always such a safe place to play ;)

Epic Fail -A mistake of monumental proportions. It requires its own term in order to point out unfathomable shortcomings.

did you happen to read the 8 pages of comments after the article?  everyone knows it's a joke and a couple hundred people agreed.  no one commenting after the article mentioned anything about ever witnessing or knowing anything about these "police."  a lot of the comments agreed with me that they need to step it up cause right now you can't tell they even exist.  not to mention this quote from stepto himself:

"Some of the more base-level stuff can result in temporary voice-bans. Repeat offences or really serious stuff, however? Your punishment will severe, Stepto saying that if you're guilty of this you can be "suspended from accessing the service either temporarily or, in very rare cases, for good". Which they're perfectly entitled to do, by the way, as when you pay your Gold subscription, you're also signing onto Microsoft's guidelines for XBL, which state that if you break the rules, they can break your account.

Though that happens, Stepto assures me, very, very rarely."

i'm not convinced they give a hoot what happens.  in fact i'm more convinced now that they in fact are not doing the job.  don't take this the wrong way, i appreciate what they are doing and i don't believe they always need to ban people, but it's quite evident they don't make much difference and have very little influence on anything.

Re: I just cant believe microsoft doesn't do more about this.

I think he is talking about this or this.

Except for the recent comments, I think we all agree on one thing and that is "racism, genderism, and descrimination are all wrong."

The points of disagreement are:

- We can/can't do anything about it

- Muting/filing complaints is/is not enough

- There is/is not a better system out there

I can see both sides on this.  One side believes that MS is doing all it can, the other believes it should be doing more because racism and genderism, as well as lifestyle choices are basic human rights that should be defended in all forms.  I think you will find that those who feel MS should step up, are also fighting for equality in everyday life, and not just on Live.

To the comments about how boring it would be if everyone played nice, you may be right.  Go ahead and trash talk, nobody is saying not to do that.  That's all fair in competition.  Chris Carter from the Vikings was rumored to be so good at talking smack that he could make someone cry without ever even uttering a single swear word at them.  On the other side, ask John Rocker, Howard Cossell, and Don Imus how their "slip ups" worked out for them.

I do want to say thank you for keeping this a (mostly) civil discussion as well, it's a rarety on any forum.

EJ's correct.  and don't take this the wrong way.  we're not talking about curse words here or respect/lack of with smack talking.  we're talking about stuff that's racist, sexist, hateful and strait up illegal.

...and that's a good point too.  To me, the problem is that people prefer "mute" to "report".  If more people would report then think of the damage control.  When you mute, all you do is shut that person down for one game.  When you use feedback you have a chance (though not a necessarily high percentage one) of being able to get the person's actions corrected (i.e. temporary or permanent bans).

Ex: If one turd plays 12 Halo 3 matches in a night, and over the course of that 20 people mutes that person, it does nothing.  However, if those same 20 mute, send negative feedback, and report then there is a greater chance that the person will get caught and fewer people in the future will have to deal with their turd like behavior.

The problem with this is that we as a culture have no care or concern for people other than ourselves, and that's a shame as far as I am concerned.

I think that much is agreed upon as well, but the disagreement seems to be that one side says the system will work if more people use it, and the other side says it will work better if people use it, but there still has to be a better system out there.  Again, I'll play Switzerland here as I can see both sides and be fairly neuteral.

On the rare occasions I've been in an open lobby, I use mute if someone is just annoying (I don't care about cussing, really).  If insults begin to fly that are obviously more than just trash talking humor, I don't hesitate to send neg f/b and file a complaint, if warranted.

I mean, you can't be sending neg. f/b over every little thing because that's just nit-picky; but you should be using it if you're offended.  That's the whole point of it, imo.

I agree with this, I'm 14 and while I might drop the occasional curse around friend and when theres no adults or younger kids around but during games I'm always hearing kids who sound 11 abusing people for no reason and slipping in racist comments that really aren't nescessary i mean cmon you don't even know these people and at the end of the day everyone is just there for a bit of fun not to argue about where your from or what colour your skin is.

I try to stay out of this kind of stuff but i think i will chime in (will probably never read this thread again, but meh).

What is a word? Just that....... a word.

If some one where to say something along the lines of 'F- yourself you silly N-' (you can figure them out) why should we get mad? Because of the words? Because it is a personal attack?

I personally don't see how a word can be considered either vulgar or racist. If it had turned out differently and they said 'Spam yourself you silly taco' Would you still be upset? You probably just dust it off and find it funny how someone could destroy a sentence like that (unless you were allergic to either spam or beef from the taco).

I have been called many things on xbox live and NEVER was i offended by any of them,Maybe it could be that it is just the internet that they are telling me this from.

At the op......just change your voice options then so you can only talk to people on your friends list?

Danke.

Speaking for myself, the childish behavior of the other players in GTA IV is the best part. I can see how it would bother some people though.

Actually, it seems more like borderline sociopathic than childish to me. Entertaining stuff.

I personally don't find this all that often. However, if it does both you I recommend that you use the "party chat" feature and the "quick mute" feature in Call of Duty and Halo 3. Microsoft has given you tools, use them. What you are asking for costs millions of dollars, and isn't feasible.

You would need to have an automated system to stop this. It would have to detect words and "bleep" them all, with repeat offenders having their voice communication tracked and recorded so they can be banned by Stepto's team.

93% of statistics are lies.

I guess I was just raised a bit different then some in this world.  My folks taught me to respect others no matter there background.  So of course this carries over to the way I treat others online. It seems that lately in multiplayer games the level of disrespect people give each other is at a all time high.   Especially the racism, to me it's out of hand.   I guess this is a rant folks.  This is the only forum I read mostly because of the maturity, and goodwill that I see folks give each other so I apologize because I know it's been said before.

Back to the subject of the post.   I just cant believe that MS doesn't have a more aggressive stance against this?????   I'm actually talking about a dedicated team who trolls the multiplayer matchs, reports and bans these folks on the spot when this type of thing is going on.  Maybe it's impossible for any company to do that, but still if the threat was there that you could be banned for conduct at anytime, then I feel it would cut down on a lot of this completely.

Am I crazy?  Should I just suck it up and continue to wade through the sea of trash because that's just the way it is?  Or do some of you folks agree with me?   Cause I sure am frustrated to be hooked on a great multiplayer game, cod4 I know I should expect it in the most popular online title right now, but lately have been having it up to here with the talk.

Like I said I apologize for the same old stuff folks wish were different about online communities, but I had to vent a bit.

Thanks for reading take it easy gamer parents.

Unfortunately most people have bigger b@lls when they are hiding behind a microphone. If we all saw each other out on the street I can pretty much garuntee that 99.99% of us would never spew racial slurs from our mouths toward another. Now the problem is how do get people to stop being that way online-we can't. The only thing we can do is report them for bad language and that really doesn't do anything except make them an avoided player. Microsoft doesn't even find out about it.
MS should come up with a section under the File a Complaint area for racist comments, (lets all be adult here, not bad language), cheating, team killing and sexist comments (gotta make sure the gamer girls are protected too, they get razed just as bad as ethnicities). Then MS would have no choice but to take action.

Would you hear half of the bigot racist things if that person knew their contact info was in their profile??? NO they would act like a decent human being. but i guess thats why half the  jerks buy these games, is to be someone different, ill never understand it, and nothing can fix it, but thank god for mute and avoid.
