Character Types, Bios & Stats

Relationships:

Pay close attention to each girl's Favorite Color, Food and her Hobbies. All 3 come into play when giving Gifts to a girl, partnering with them, and ultimately keeping a strong relationship so they'll give you swimsuits and gifts.

When you start playing the game as different characters, remember what styles of swimsuits they have in their shops and what they wear. The girls prefer different styles of suits, with most of them being offended by (and less likely to accept) the more revealing and wild suits. Lisa and Christie are the exception, actually preferring it more and hating more modest, cute stuff. You'll figure out what style of swimsuits the girls are more susceptible to as you play through the game.

For example: If you want to get in good with Christie, you need to buy her a item thats related to her interests, or personal taste. Her favorite food is Tomato Juice, and character favorites rarely show up when you're partnered with them, so be prepared to find something similar. A tomato fits the bill. Wrap this in black wrapping paper and send it to her. Even though she loves tomatos and tomato juice, she may return the present to you if its wrapped in a color she hates. She also loves driving, so a RC Car would work nicely. Find a black RC Car in Zack's Shop. Again, make sure to wrap it in black wrapping paper.

Also, when in the Casino, take a look at each girl's slot machine. Most icons in the slot machine will give you additional clues of what the girl enjoys.

Volleyball:

Pay close attention to the stats in each category, and match up the character you're playing as with someone that compliments her well.

For example: When playing as Leifang, a good choice for a partner would be Hitomi. Place Leifang in the back or middle to recieve powerspikes because of her her high defense and don't worry about long-range desperation moves like back-court spikes because her jump is very high. Put Hitomi up front for some nasty spikes because of her high power rating. Hitomi's midrange Defense rating will only be a problem when you're faced with someone like Tina or Kokoro spiking up close at you.

All characters have the strengths and weaknesses. Even the balance characters Christie and Lisa, who are both well rounded, don't really excell in any area that changes the flow of the match.

While Kokoro is unique in that she has very high power and speed, this is offset by her limited ability of passing the ball, receiving spikes and poor jump.

Stat Explanations:

Power - Power behind your characters spikes and serves

Technique - How well Your character can pass and recieve normal spikes

Defense - How well your character can block and recieve powerful spikes

Jump - How far up your character can jump for cross-court spikes from the back of the court without the ball rimming or hitting the net

Speed - Movement speed. Faster characters can run up to execute a spike set by their partner faster from their partner from a longer distance

Game Controls, Timing, Mechanics and Tips

[ZD= Zack Dollars, the game's currency]

Volleyball - The First Team To Score 7 Wins. When Deuce occurs the first team to reach 10 wins. Unlike Real Volleyball, there are no Endlines or Sidelines:

Bonuses & Motions-

You will not recieve bonuses the first Volleyball match of each vacation (If Volleyball is the first thing you do), nor if you have a bad relationship with your partner. If you keep a partner and are not getting bonuses, its a sign she will leave you VERY soon, unless you make up for it quickly with good performance in Volleyball and great gifting.

Nice Serve!: Time your serve perfectly, when the ball is about head-level with your character. Attempting and missing a Nice Serve too late will resualt in a fault, too soon will serve the ball, but without the bonus ZD. 1000 ZD for normal serve (A button, easy timing), 2000 ZD for jump serve (Forward plus A button. Trickier timing). You cannot get a Nice Serve! for a underhand serve (back plus A. No timing required, not possible to fault, always goes over the net).

Nice Block!: Win the point by stuffing your opponents shot with a block, 1000 ZD.  Blocking too early will result in your character missing the block altogether or being hit by the ball at an angle that makes the next shot impossible to retrieve for your partner. Blocking too late will will either make your character stagger or jump late and miss the ball altogether. Characters with low defense stats may be knocked down when trying to block a shot from a high power character, even if the timing of the block is perfect.

Nice Spike!: Have your partner set up a spike and while in mid-air near or away from the net hit A and what direction you want the ball to travel (though the direction the ball actually travels is a little Ambiguity, regardless of how direct your instruction is), cross-courts are most effective, unless the area directly in front of you is empty. Time your spike so your opponent misses the shot completely, 1000 ZD. To Spike, you must be set up by your partner, or recieve the ball from your opponent with the right timing (called a Quick Set).

Knock Down (OW!): Knocking a character down with a well timed direct spike, even if it doesn't win the point, will award you 1000 ZD.

Passing: To normally pass the ball to your partner, simply press B. Your Partner will automatically pass the ball to you, if its in range to recieve the ball from the opponent, unless you tell it you want to Quick Set instead of a pass.

Set, Quick Set & Quick Spike:

Set: After recieving a pass from your partner, press B for your character to do a setup for a spike or if the character is not in position to spike or doesn't have enough time to set one up (usually occours when you or your partner have just been knocked down and are recovering), a regular shot. A regular shot is when you decline a spike or don't have time to perform one and your character will just bunt the ball softly over the net. Just press A from the ground, it will send the ball softly over the net, making it easy for the opponent to spike it back at you quickly, usually resulting in you losing the point. You can direct general directions of what point on the court you want to set the ball for your partner by press back, forward, up or down plus B.

There are two ways to quick spike. One is with the quick set. To Have your partner do a quick set, press forward and B when the ball is traveling across the net, (you must be in the back part of the court to do it yourself, if you're close to the net, you'll set your partner up to do a Quick Spike) they simply raise their arms and pass the ball to you quickly, giving you time to jump (wherever you are on the court) for a quick spike. Be aware that when receiving a powerful spike or quick spike from your opponent, it is not recommended you do a quick set yourself, as even characters with high defense ratings will sometimes lose the ball when attempting to quick set off a well hit shot.

You may also do a quick spike without any set from your partner at all. This occurs usually when you have just knocked down an opponent, or when they have had to dive to save a shot and are just trying to get the ball back over the net. If they serve up a easy, non-spike shot, simply press forward and A before the ball crosses over the net and your character will jump up to spike the ball. Hit A again to spike it.

Diving: If you're out of the reach of a shot, you can try to dive and recover the ball by pressing whatever direction the ball is flying in and B. Its not a exact method, sometimes your characeter will refuse to dive, if its a shot thats so far over, theres no chance for her to recover it.

Timing:

THE most important part of Volleyball in Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 (and the original, as well) is timing. From serving to blocking to simply receiving a ball, the time you press a specific button impacts everything.

Sometimes in the game, you'll miss shots even if you're standing right where the ball is heading and have pressed B. This isn't because the game is "wonky", "unresponsive" or "luck-based", its because you timed receiving the ball wrong. This comes into play most when receiving powerful spikes and cross-court shots.

Pressing the B button too late will result in your character reaching out with her hands, with the ball flying off in a undesired direction, a majority of the time making it impossible for your partner to recover. At certain angles your character may also do a unsucessful dive if you've pressed the B button too late.

Pressing B too early will result in your character going into a normal set position to catch the ball, but the impact of the shot will knock her down (especially if its a powerful character like Tina spiking the ball at you). The ball may also hit the sand right in front of your character's feet. It's not because your character isn't in the right position to receive the shot, its because you tried to receive the shot too early.

Pressing B either way too early or way too late will result in your character hunching over and grunting, in a pseudo-set pose. It takes a while to recover from this phase, so don't just start pounding the B button as soon as your opponent is setting up a shot.

Learn how long to wait to press the B button for each type of shot simply by playing against the CPU. Each time you miss a shot, notice the animation your character goes into and where the ball lands. Cover the same areas and remember what timing works best with each type of shot.

When you're comfortable recieving the ball near the net, move to the back court and practice the timing of shots from there.

Tips:

• Blocking is a viable and powerful tool in DOAX2 (unlike the original where it rarely worked), especially for characters with high defense ratings. It is awkward and hard to time at first, but it is required for winning points when your partner is out of position and you're left with only the option to block or dive to recieve the ball (blocking is less risky than diving).
• If you have your partner playing the net, beware. She loves to block all the time. Run up close to your partner, as the opponent CPU will most likely be able to recover the shot your partner attempted to block. Or the CPU will knock your partner down, leaving the ball hovering up in the air close to the front of the court. If the opponent is slightly to your partner's left, stand on the right of your partner (and vice versa) to recieve the recovery shot off your partner's missed or unsucessful block. While this leaves your entire back court wide open, its a sacrifice you must make, if you want the CPU playing close to the net most of the match.
• If your partner is playing the back court, prepare to be frustrated and occasionally amazed. Regardless of the character's stats, your partner will switch between a volleyball machine, receiving and setting shots that would be garunteed misses as a human player, to just standing there in a daze, letting easy shots hit her in the face or shins.
• Because the computer has many faults when playing either position on the court, it is inevitable you will lose some points and matches because of them. One fault you can correct, however, is their placement. If you have a powerhouse like Tina suddenly moves to the backcourt (usually to receive a ball that you wouldn't have been able to), get her back to the net by hitting the right thumbstick forward. If you want to move a character to the back court, hit the right thumbstick backward.
• The angle you play Volleyball at is very impractical and weird. It takes alot of time to adapt to, and you will miss shots that look like they're landing very close to you, but infact, its way over on the other side of the court. The depth of the court is easy enough to see, but distinguishing how far over you are to the left or right is a challenge and vague. Eventually you'll get used to it and adapt, it just takes getting used to.

Jetskiing:

Jetskiing is the biggest addition to DOAX2 and far more easy to get into than volleyball. Simply race to the correct side of each buoy (To the right of red, to the left of yellow. Smaller orangeish buoys designate the course path) to gain turbo and beat your opponents to the finish line. You will lose Turbo if you stay out of the course too long.

Controls:

Butt Battle and Tug of War (@ Pool):

Guessing games against the CPU.

In Butt battle, press forward to bump your opponent, back then forward quickly for a strong bump and back for dodge. Up and Down change your position slightly, but usually leave you wide open for attack.

In Tug Of War, press forward to feint and back to tug. Feint beats a tug, tug beats a neutral stance or a unsuccessful feint attempt.

Flag Race (@ Beachs)

Button mashing mini game.

As soon as you hear "GO!", start slamming the A button as fast as you can. When you are getting close to the flag, press B to dive for it.

The CPU is random here, and will sometimes win, sometimes lose (regardless of how fast you mash).

Waterslide[Of Doom] (@ Brilliant Jungle)

Memorization and endurance game.

Stay in the waterslide chute by pressing left or right, depending on the type of turn. When coming up on extreeme turns that make the camera hook around, accelerate by pressing forward, or you will fall off the slide. Very high difficulty in general.

Pool Hopping (@Pool)

Press the corresponding button for each color. Hold down the button for long gaps, just tap the button for short jumps.

Mini Games are included mainly for eye candy and to break things up, their ZD rewards are minimal. If you're playing for money, stick with Jetskiing and Volleyball.

Casino:

Available at night time only, you can go to the Casino from your hotel room to play Blackjack, Roulette, Poker and slot machines.

Times of the Day:

Your Vacation lasts over 14 days, and you spend your time in 4 segments each day. Morning, Daytime, Evening and Night.

You may spend as much time as you wish shopping without the time changing.

Any activity, from Relaxing, to giving a gift to a girl to Jetskiing cosumes 1 timeslot of your day. Once you hit Night, you are forced back to your hotel, and your only activity you can participate in is the Casino.

Shopping:

The various stores around the island. Each store has different tabs, containing different items and options. Press left or right, or the triggers to scroll through the tabs.

Accessory Shop:

The place to buy basic accessories(tab1) and cosmetics(tab2).

Sports Shop:

The place to buy swimsuits(tab1), Jetskiis(tab2), and Sundries(tab3). Sundries are where you can find tickets to play the mini-games, a upgraded camera/film and other miscellaneous items.

Zack of All Trades:

Where you buy hobby-specific items, food(tab1) and rewrap gifts(tab2).

Gifting:

To gift, simply select the girl you want to give a wrapped gift to if you see them at any location in the game and select "Give Gift To <Character>". You can only gift your current partner at night, in the hotel. Select "Give Gift" and select your current partner. Gifting burns through 1 timeslot in your day. For Example, if you give a gift in the morning, when you return to the menus, it will be Daytime.

Your Menu:

Press X when in your hotel or at the location select screen while on vacation to bring up your Menu. You can change swimsuits(tab1), accessories(tab2), items(tab3) and view/unwrap gifts(tab4) here.

FAQs:

Q: How do I play offline multiplayer?

A: You can't. Multiplayer is for Xbox Live only.

Q: Why is the girl i'm gifting to sending my gifts back to me? Its stuff she likes AND its wrapped in her favorite color!

A: It is harder to sucessfully gift another girl when you have a partner, even for simple stuff. If you're gifting solo and getting returns, you're probably bothering the girl at the wrong time of the day. Some girls, like Ayane, hate to be bothered at certain times of the day (in Ayane's case, the morning). Some also hate to be gifted too often, like Christie.

Q: I have a great relationship my with partner/girl i'm gifting, but she still won't accept this swimsuit i'm trying to give her!

A: The Girls all have specific tastes and styles they enjoy, so a cute suit that is easy to gift to Kasumi will be a real challenge for Christie. Also consider color. Its easier to gift a suit, regardless of its style, if its in a color the girl likes. ALL suits in the game can be given to ANY girl, some are just more challenging than others. If you're trying to get something sleazy and revealing on Kasumi, just pepper her with gifts she enjoys throughout the vacation and have your relationship at the best possible point before attempting to give her a suit she'll hate.

Q: Why arn't the girls giving me any swimsuits? I'm giving them a ton of stuff they like.

A: This shouldn't be a problem if you're playing solo. If you have a partner, its more rare to recieve swimsuits from the other girls. In general, though, you recieve swimsuits less often than you did in the original DOAX.

Q: How do I open gifts from Zack?

A: Press X to bring up your menu and goto the 4th tab (gifts) and select the gift from Zack.

Q: How do I play mini-games? Pool Hopping is the only one I see available.

A: You have to buy a ticket from the Sports Shop in the 3rd tab (Sundries) to play them.

Q: The english dub in this game is worse than nails on a chalkboard, how do I change it to Japanese?

A: In the options menu, from the main menu.

Q: I set the language to Japanese and subtitles to English, but the subtitles arn't showing up, what gives?

A: They do show up, just not in the opening and closing cinematics for some reason. When you're playing the actual game, it will function properly

Q: Even though I have the game set to Japanese, when the game starts, the girl at the title screen is an English voice actor.

A: She is. But when you play the actual game, it will be in Japanese. Then going back to the title screen anytime after that, it will be in Japanese.

Q: The game is rated Mature and one of the descriptors is Partial Nudity. Where is this Partial Nudity, exactly? :)

A: There isn't a specific cinematic with full-on nudity like the original DOAX or DOA3, but alot of the more wild suits reveal the entire backside of a character, with little more than a single string (some with colors similar to beach-tanned skin, no less) to cover them up.

One way to find out that character's love quote is to give them their favorite food thats listed in the manual.
They usually say something about cherishing it forever or something like "You shouldn't have!". Or in Ayane's case, not say anything but you hear her say "AH!" (or at least she does in Japanese)

Lisa: "Wow! Thank you! I love it!" (love, duh)

Ayane: "This is pretty nice." (like)

They usually say something about cherishing it forever or something like "You shouldn't have!". Or in Ayane's case, not say anything but you hear her say "AH!" (or at least she does in Japanese)

Ayane: "This is pretty nice." (like)

I'm not sure exactly when it started appearing but I now have two new options to choose at an empty location (i.e Brilliant Jungle with no other characters there). If I am partnered up with someone I now have the option to either

BE FRIENDLY: basicly relax but with your partner
or

IMITATE PARTNER: Instead of your character's relax animation she will do your partner's


Do more options appear the longer you play the game??

The Be Friendly one has appeared twice regardless of character.  It something you should take if relations with your partner aren't so great.  The Imitate partner one I've not gotten (first I've heard of it).  Who did you get that with?

OmniCron X, many thanks for the tip, didn't realise you could do this. So, if I have a returned swimsuit in my inventory, at what point can i rewrap it, and how? Is it only in the hotel or during the day at one of the shops etc ? I've been trashing the suits that I'd had returned which I already owned so have lost a mint in zack $ ! Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.   

i'll answer this one.

you can rewrap things at Zacks of All Trades (ZoaT).  Just select ZoaT, use the LT/RT to switch to the paper wrapping tab, pick a color, then select the items you want to wrap up.

Ok. Now I bought a bikini and when in go to the hotel, en I look up that bikini. It says that it is not in my collection :S!

It's a bit confusing in that respect.  Do you have it in your inventory?  What's in your inventory & your collection are 2 different things.  Think of your inventory stuff as the "on hand" items, stuff you can quickly use &/or change into.  The collection stuff is kinda like storage for extra items or stuff you're not currently using or don't plan on using in the near future.

But how to open ur inventory then, is it easy or what?

When in the hotel, press X button and your "inventory" items will appear, ie the ones like Randzz mentioned you can get your hands on straight away. By then hitting the left or right trigger you'll go through the swimsuit, accessry and gift tabs (from memory).

Any swimsuit you bought that day will appear after pressing X. Infact if you press X at any time of the vacation, not just at the hotel, it will bring up the "inventory". Highlight that suit and it'll ask if you want to wear it or add to collection.

The choice is yours ! Hope that helps

How much, and what bikini's do you need for the first, second, third, fourth and fifth achievement?

I've played for hours now and as you will see from my achievement list, I have the grand total of 0 points. 

I, like many of the posters here, play for the fun and relaxation of the game so when the achievements arrive then so be it, so Im afraid Im not the best to ask on how best to get them !

I loved the first game and that had no achievements except the challenge of collecting all the items and suits and I still never got it after 300 hours of play. 

There are however some great spreadsheets on offer from some of the posters that detail the costs of all swimsuits and who can buy what swimsuit in theie own Sports shop.

Personally, just play for the fun of it and if you want some achievements i suppose collecting ALL the swimsuits for one character is a good start.

One way to find out that character's love quote is to give them their favorite food thats listed in the manual.
They usually say something about cherishing it forever or something like "You shouldn't have!". Or in Ayane's case, not say anything but you hear her say "AH!" (or at least she does in Japanese)

Lisa: "Wow! Thank you! I love it!" (love, duh)

Ayane: "This is pretty nice." (like)

Kasumi: "I appreciate the thought, but I can't accept this." (doesn't like)

Kokoro: "Wow, I'm so happy! I'll treasure this forever, I promise." (love)

If the character already has the item she'll probably give it back to you as a present regardless of whether she likes your character or not.  It's preferred that you gift them perishable items during one of the day segments.
