Battlestations: Midway FAQ

Battlestations: Midway FAQ

by Crazy Nut BE

I. Introduction

Battlestations: Midway is an WW II RTS/action game currently under development by Eidos for PC and Xbox 360. B:M follows the story of naval recruit Henry Walker, whose first assignment as a gunner at Pearl Harbor is the starting point of an incredible career at the heart of the US Pacific Fleet in 1942, in what was to become one of the most inspirational military campaigns in history.

In B:M, you will be able to use airplanes, submarines and warships while re-enacting some of the most famous naval battles in the US navy history.

F. General Tips

  • When attacking a ship, try "crossing the T". You do this by making the side of you ship face the bow of the enemy ship (so both ships form a T). this way, most of your guns can fire at the enemy ship, while only a few of the enemy guns can fire at you.
  • When using the submarine, only surface when you're absolutely sure there are no enemies around. Also, don't surface to fire torpedos, but stay under water. This way, ships can't use their guns against you.
  • Zeros and Wilcats can be incredible bombers. Use them to take out lightely armoured ships. This is also very usefull for the third plane challenge (Strike on Z-Force). Just arm oscars with bombs, and have them attack the Hermes. They should sink it on the first run.
  • Bombs that miss a ship and fall in the water can still do damage, because of the underwater shock waves that damage the hull.

Re: RE: Re: Battlestations: Midway FAQ
by Gebx:

I'm hoping people will read this and will stop posting the same questions over and over again. So here's a short list of things you should know that will help you out when you play.

Gameplay Tips (all taken from this this article http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/756/756600p1.html with a few add-ons)

You can control the armament on each of your aircraft so if you see a sub, go ahead and launch some dive bombers equipped with depth charges. (You can also send out fighter planes with 200lbs bombs, that way you can drop a few bombs on a boat and then dogfight till they drop.)

When you are in the middle of a heated ship battle, click the left bumper to repair your weapons, engines, the hull and to put out fires. Addressing important and immediate issues is the key keeping your fleet afloat. (A.I will not take care of repairs, you have to do this on your own.)

Underwater, submarines. To fire torpedoes, make sure you are at periscope depth -- change your depth by clicking up or down on the D-pad.  Take aim at a battleship and then fire torps to sink her. (you don't need the periscope to shoot (Y button), but you do need to be at the right depth)

Battlestations Midway is one big vehicular chess match. In chess, you are not going to send two pawns to take on a queen. So don't send a bunch of puny little destroyers to take on cruisers or Battleships. Destroyers are good submarine hunters but stand no chance against bigger ships.

On the Islands of Solomon map, send out battleships and submarines -- avoid destroyers and cruisers. If an enemy sub is threatening, launch a few dive bombers with depth charges to take it out.

You need to go on the offensive and cut the enemy off at the head in order to achieve victory in Battlestations Midway. Instead of focusing on destroying every ship that leaves a shipyard, take out the shipyard. Instead of dogfighting for ten minutes to take out a few fighter planes, take out the enemy carrier or airfield.

Send out aerial squadrons in groups with a fighter escort. Use your fighter planes to engage enemy fighters, leaving bombers alone to engage targets. Moving in groups will spread out enemy AA fire, giving you more of a chance to fill enemy ships with torpedoes.

Use the battle map to send your units after enemy targets. When all of your planes and ships have been assigned targets, switch to the unit that is going to reach its target the soonest and take manual control. The computer AI does a decent job of hitting targets with bombs and torps, but no one does it better than you.

After you've dropped your load on an enemy ship yard, try assigning your bombers to strafe AA guns. On the battle map, zoom in with the right trigger and you'll see enemy guns scattered around the island. For torpedo bombers, use them to dogfight with enemy fighter planes.

(And the last bit of information from the article is) Work together. Planning an attack with your teammates is much more effective than everyone going at it alone.

Other Important Tips (please post more if you know any)

To give a unit to another player go to map, select unit and click on the left joystick, a menu will pop up with the players name. Select player and continue (thank King JJ for that bit of info). Voila, you've just given the host a ship, so now he won't quit on you and abort the game!

To invert the airplane controls (up is down, down is up or vice versa), go to options>settings in the main menu.

Hope this helps!

My plan is so simple an idiot could have thought of it
