On the low end, Pinnacle makes one, El Gato has one still i think, and you can use any DV bridge type device because they work over firewire without drivers. I found this company on google that makes drivers for USB capture devices that only come with windows software.

On the high-end there is a lot more choice. So if are going for broadcast quality, you can have a lot to pick from.

A little off-topic but I don't use Juggurnaut. Embarrassed [:$]

You should post on the WaW forums just to see how much bull I get from people.

On-Topic, nice guide. I am looking to buy a cap card.

If your looking for good quality for little fnu videos nothing serious definitely  go with a dazzle platinum.  If your looking for more series MLG pro stuff go with the HD PVR that Hooded Vendetta linked before.

If anyone is looking into getting the Pinnacle Dazzle capturing device it is on sale right now at Best Buy. Reg price is $92.99, on sale for $59.99. I'm definitely stopping by after work to pick this up.

You will need to get either Y cables, 3 of them for l/r & video, or an RCA distribution amplifier. The amp is the way to go because you won't lose any video quality which you do with the Y cables. Might also want to get some extra RCA cables to run from amp to TV and amp to Dazzle.

If it's anything like the Hauppage capture device that I have, you will have to switch your 360 to play in SD not in HD to pick it up on the capture device.

Dazzle should come with it's own DVD Recorder. I use it and it works fine.

Do they make a Dazzle, Hauppage, or other video capture device that has a HDMI, DVI, or Component input on it??? Because the only ones I have seen only have composite inputs, if they made one with atleast DVI or Component I would buy one!

The Hauppauge HD PVR has component inputs, but no HDMI or DVI. It's also pretty simple to setup and use. I had one for a week before it broke, had to ship it back to Amazon and get a refund.

Re: A Beginner's Guide to the Capture Card.

Wow...this thread has been VERY helpful!Big Smile [:D]

I'm looking into buying a capture card now I FINALLY have some money to purchase one.

After having read the entire thread, I can safely say that I understand it a LOT more so thanks to Decode and all the other helpful people in this thread, who posted how they got on with their respective capture devices.

I do have a question though that wasn't answered. Probably a very noobish question but I'm curious all the same:

I bought this video editing book a while ago and in the glossary, it says: "Capture Card: A device that adds DV sockets to computers not already equipped with them, often subscribing to the OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) standard"

The OHCI bit goes over my head but my laptop has DVI as does one of our HDTVs. So, going from the definition in my book, is it possible to connect the TV and Laptop together with a DV cable and use some kind of package to record and edit the footage? This might not work at all, the book I have was published in 2002. Also, if it does work, would it have a massive impact on the quality?

If it doesn't, it's no biggie as I've garnered a GREAT deal of knowledge from this thread and, as I'm assuming HOODED VENDETTA's capture card will capture in Pal 60 due to him being a fellow Brit, then that's the kind of card I should go for.

I'll stop typing now. Thanks for all your help and hopefully, I'll be able to post the outcome of my little journey here as well!Big Smile [:D]

Re: A Beginner's Guide to the Capture Card.
So i've been looking into getting a capture card for a few months now, but still know nothing much about them.

- I currently play through VGA as my TV doesn't have a HDMI input. Will I be able to record in HD if I purchase a capture card that will allow me to?

- I use Turtlebeach X4's, will I be able to record sound still or will I have to switch back to my normal TV sound?

-
Could you recommend any capture cards.. Budget - £150 MAX

Does your tv have component (R,G,B) or composite input and do you have the component/composite cable for the xbox? If not then ignore the following.
- option 1) For standard defintion recording, the Pinnacle Dazzle works good and comes
with editing software, plug the component cable into the proper inputs on the
tv and the yellow, red/white cables into the dazzle. Since you have the X4's
you can use the red/white cables for recording
. Also make sure the cable is
set to TV and not HDTV or it won't work. If you have just the composite
(yellow) input on your tv then plug in just the GREEN cable out of the
component cables. From there you will be good to go. This is the set up I
have, for now, and it works pretty well and the video looks pretty decent on
                    youtube.
- option 2) For HD recording, I'm eventually going to buy the Hava Platinum HD
http://tinyurl.com/3kdukb, just do some research and you should be able
to find something within your budget. You will also need to get an editing
                    program that deals with HD.

If you have none of these inputs then you will have to buy equipment that will down-convert your video signal to composite or maybe s-video, not sure if there's anything that will convert it into component. By doing this though your video quality will drop drastically.

Hope this has helped out some.

Hehe, no prob man. About your Turtlebeach headset, have you had any problems with the speakers setting off the mic? Mine have been doing that even if I barely tap on the outside of the headset. I just ordered some Tritton Ax Pros so hopefully they're work much better.

I've had no problems that I'm aware of with my Turtlebeach headset (touch wood Stick out tongue [:P]). Although a few of my friends have had problems with theirs and had to send back.

I must say though, switching from using my headset to normal TV sound is amazing. It's like I can't hear anything when using the TV sound lol.

Same here. Got sick of my mic going off so I tried using my XBOX360 wireless mic with my crappy stereo I have hooked up to my tv. I'll just say that I'll definitely deal with my mic going off with the headset. Stick out tongue [:P]

Re: A Beginner's Guide to the Capture Card.
OK, following on from my post further up the thread, I'm now looking into buying an HDTV ("gotta" get that anyway) and then getting an HD Capture Card to capture HD footage.

I have a question regarding this: how many HDMI ports does the TV need? I'm guessing 2 (one for the Cap Card, one for the 360). If it does need 2, is there a way to create more ports, like with some sort of adapter (like you have with plugs)?
