Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ

Those of us that have been on this particular forum for a long time have seen a trend with the questions that are being asked by newcomers to the game. I thought that I would try to help these players by creating this FAQ so that they could have some questions answered quickly and also understand some of the jargon that they see being tossed around by the "veterans." Hope this helps and please feel free to elaborate if needed.

FAQ:

Is this game really worth the money?

Only you will be able to answer that question. You can take advice from friends, but it will be your experience that makes it or breaks it. You can rent it or download it from Xbox LIVE’s Marketplace.

The demo contains only 1 board (BridgeTooFar) and allows you to play only 2 sessions. After that, you have to log out and back in to be able to play it again.

What does PPH stand for?

PPH stands for Points per Hour. It is the average point count that you have scored in your “career.”

How can I join a friend’s game?

You have to start the game and go into the Xbox LIVE portion of the game. After you have done this, press the round X button on the controller to open up a blade menu. Choose “Friends” and scroll down to the friend with which you would like to play. Press “A” and then choose “Join Session in Progress.”

How do I open my parachute?

As you are falling, press "Y" to open your parachute. If you are ejecting from a helicopter to get on top of a building, it is recommended that you open and close your parachute a few times so that you fall faster (do this by pressing "Y"). This helps you from becoming a target by an enemy sniper.

How do I talk to teammates?

Press and hold "X" when you want to talk to teammates. Be careful when you are in enemy territory, however. If an enemy is close by, they will be able to hear what you say. If you are close by an enemy and they are talking, you will see a red microphone appear in the upper right corner of your screen and you will also hear what they are saying.

Re: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ

How do I create a clan?

Get into the main menu in the Xbox LIVE portion of the game. Go to where it says "My Clan." It will give you the option to create a clan (assuming you are not presently in a clan). You can name it pretty much anything that you want to. You can then send Clan Invite to friends and other people that you have met in-game. You can assign co-leaders that can set up matches in your absence.

How can I join an existing clan?

One of two ways is possible. 1) Send a Clan Join Request. You can do this by going to the Clan menu, find the clan that you want to join, and selecting Request to Join Clan. 2) Contact the leader of that particular clan (assuming you know who it is). You can also contact a co-leader as well. Both ways may require a "try out" to see if you are up to par with that particular clan.

How do I start clan matches?

Once you are in your clan menu, choose "Ready My Clan." You are now available to be challenged by other clans and challenge in return. You can decide what map to play when you are creating a clan match and also how many people are allowed per team.

How can I view my stats?

Enter the Xbox LIVE portion of the game and choose "View Stats," then choose "Personal Stats," and then "Personal Stats" again. You can also view the leader boards (the top 10 of every category), centered "boards" (where you can view how you stack up against others), and friends "boards" (where you see how your friends compare to one another.

You can also see how far you are from the next rank by choosing “View Stats” and then “Ranks.” This gives you a good idea on how much work you have in front of you until you get to that next “level.”

What is lag?

Lag is something that has to do mainly with the EA servers. Typically, players experience stuttering play or quick deaths at the hands of the enemy. It is recommended that you leave that particular server and try another. If you continue to have issues, try signing out of the EA servers and signing back in.

What is "quick-switching"?

Quick-switching is available only for the Sniper and Engineer kits (the ones with slow pump times - China, MEC). This is how it works: After a shot is fired, the weapon is changed to another weapon and then back again quickly. This gets rid of the reload time and allows the weapon to be fired rapidly. Some consider it a skill, others consider it a glitch. You be the judge.

What is "wall-glitching"?

Wall-glitching can occur in almost every map. It is when a player gets into the walls of the building. This allows them easy kills because they can fire out, but cannot be fired upon when they are in the glitch. The only way to kill them is to do one of two things: 1) get into the glitch yourself or 2) wait for them to come out to reload their weapons. This is considered a cheat by most. It is recommended that you leave the offending players bad feedback so that it is less likely that you will get stuck in another match with them.

Re: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ

What is "worm-glitching"?

Worm-glitching is when a player repeatedly pulls the left trigger when in combat. This causes the player to fall to the ground and immediately return to his feet. This makes it hard to kill this player because you cannot get an accurate aim on him/her. This is also considered to be a cheat by most players.

What is a "heli-camper"?

A heli-camper is someone who does nothing but wait by the helicopter pad for the helicopter to respawn so that they can take it.

What is a team killer?

A team killer is a player that kills his/her own teammates. There are accidental kills (running someone over, shooting a teammate in a battle for a flag, etc.), but be careful of TKs. If you experience a TK, press the back button on your controller, highlight the team killers name, press "A," and choose "Vote to Kick." It is recommended that you tell the other people on your team so that they are all aware of what is going on and then they can also choose to kick the player as well.

What is “boosting”?

Boosting is when a player has friends help him/her get medals/kills/points. It is frowned upon, but many people have done it; especially to get the harder medals (Mortar, Medic, etc.).

Will there be new content available for download (new maps, weapons, etc.)?

The chances aren’t good for this. This game has been out for nearly a year now and has not seen any improvements. With the new Battlefield coming out shortly, it is unlikely that new content will be available for download.

What is the new Battlefield called?

It is called Battlefield: Bad Company. It is scheduled for release in March 2007.

Does the "D-Pad" do anything in this game?

Yes, it does. The up and down arrows zoom in and out on the mini-map. This is helpful when either you or a teammate is using the GPS in the sniper's kit. It allows you to see the locations of the enemies throughout the entire map.

Pressing the right arrow will bring up the location of the flags and how far away they are. This is all visible on-screen.

Pressing the left arrow will bring up a large view of the map. Once again, this is helpful when the GPS is being used. It's also good when you want to see what vehicles are at your base or the enemy's base.

How can I join my friend's game when I see him/her playing BF2?

Well, make sure that you get into the Xbox LIVE portion of the game. Then bring up your "blade" menu by pressing the Xbox button on your controller. Go to your friend's list and select the friend that you want to play with. You can then do one of two things: You can send a Game Invite if you want them to join your room or you can choose "Join Session in Progress" if you want to join their room. If neither of those options are available, then your friend has not entered a server yet or they are playing a clan match.

Re: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ
Once every 5 minutes or so, Artillery Strike becomes available. Zoom out on your mini-map if you can't find it (zoom out by pressing down on the d-pad).

Once it is available, head to it and press "A." You then get a bird's eye view of the map. Use the right stick to position the cursor where you want to drop the Artillery Strike and then press "A."

Usually you drop the Artillery Strike where there is the most red. However, some times it makes more sense to drop it on an enemy unit taking a flag. Use your better judgment.

Re: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ

How do I destroy an enemy tank?

Well, there are a few different ways that this can be accomplished:

You can use 2-3 c4s from the Spec Ops kit. Press “B” to put down multiple sticks. Usually you want to do it on the back of the tank so the enemy doesn’t see you coming. Another good idea with the Spec Ops kit is to throw 2-3 c4s on the front of a Jeep, head towards a tank, and bail out when you are about 10 or so feet from it. Let the Jeep roll into the tank and then press the detonator in your hand to destroy the tank.

If you are playing as an Engineer, you can use your rockets to destroy the tank. Keep in mind that it usually takes 2-3 rockets to destroy the tank and by that time, he/she may know where you are hiding so use at least a little stealth!! If you are close range, you can place a land mine next to the tank, back up, and then shoot a rocket at the land mine. This will effectively destroy the tank quickly. You can also place landmines around flags to help protect from tanks and Jeeps.

When you play as a Sniper, you can use the Laser Target. Choose the weapon and line the dot up on the tank. Press and hold the right trigger until it locks. This will cause a rocket to drop down and destroy the target. One thing that I learned and can be quite effective is to hold down the trigger until it *almost* locks on and let go before it does. The enemy in the tank will bail out to avoid the missile and you can pick them off with the rifle you have in your kit.

Grenades are next to useless against a fully armored tank, but they can be a great distraction if you see a teammate going up for the kill. Just be careful that you don’t accidentally kill your teammate!

Re: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ

If you are an Engineer, a good technique for going 1-on-1 versus another tank:  Always enter a tank with your rocket launcher armed. If approaching another 120, get the first shot off, reload and get the second shot off, then exit the tank quickly and launch the rocket.  Don't exit the tank too early and let your opponent's 2nd shot kill you. Trick is to take the two shots and then destroy them with your rocket (while they are reloading for their third shot).

Then hopefully, you have enough time to repair your own tank with the torch welder.  Better to have an engineer with you riding up top. He can do the repairs for you (and he earns points). Many don't realize this, but the machine gunner in a 120mm gets the big points for neutralizing and capturing flags.

Re: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ
Im playing against a sniper and he keeps diving to the ground immediately on contact, he usually hits me, why?

Most likely he has a dot on his screen, by going prone the rifle will hit exactly where the dot is on your screen. This is a cheap kill and can usually be countered by getting up close to them and jumping from side to side a lot (dotters arent very skilled).

Cheese.

Re: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Online FAQ
Can I join games of friends with a lower/higher rank?

  • lower ranked server: private - sergeant
  • middle ranked server: sergeant 1st class - captain
  • upper ranked server: major and above
  • lower ranked cannot just enter a match with the match browser, they only see matches of their own rank group
  • lower ranked can join friends who are in higher ranked servers, using their gamertag and selecting "join session". So a private can play with majors etc.
  • Someone in a higher ranked server cannot join a match of a friend who plays in a lower ranked server
  • unranked servers host all ranks, but of course will not affect your ranking, points, kills stats etc.

Why do I see a major in a ranked middle rank game?
  • a captain who gets a 9th medal, gets 10,620 points or reaches 70 pph in a middle ranked match, will be promoted in the next game but can still play with major rank as long as he doesnt leave that server. As soon as he quits the game or gets disconnected, he can only join upper ranked matches. So a major could well play multiple games in middle ranked servers. the same for a sergeant 1st class staying in the lower ranked servers after promotion.
I got deranked! WTF???

You can get deranked by:
  • playing a few matches where you dont get many points, hence lowering your pph. This is mostly why ppl get deranked. Not getting flags, getting baseraped, or worse, your team baserapes but you hardly get kills yourself.
  • you teamkilled so much you actually gets points drawn so much your get back to a lower rank. Also influences your pph, and this is used a lot by good players who should be in an upper ranked serer but don't want to because there is not as much choice of matches/maps, have harder competition and its bad for stats. These are people who spoil the game for many others.
  • You can't lose a medal so it will not be the cause of deranking.

Unleash the virgins!

How to kick Teamkillers (TK)

If you see that ppl are teamkiling on purpose, for whatever reason, remember their gamertag, press back button to bring up the teams list, highlight their tag, select with A and select "vote to kick". If the majority of players do this, the person will be kicked from this server for an hour. It helps if you inform the rest of your team and ask them to kick (keep X pressed while talking to the team). Also, open up their gamertag and leave bad feedback for unsportive behaviour.

Real teamkillers:
*TK for tanks, GTAMs, artillery strike or helicopters, or to get more points when taking a flag as 1st/only person
*Just bad attitude
*absolute noobs having no idea its the ppl marked RED that should be killed (i.e. think its a death match).
*some higher ranked gamers who lower their PPH (see above) really fast by teamkilling to play in lower ranked servers
*Some might not agree here but I concider ppl who drop an arty strike without timed announcement on a base while seeing you are there baseraping. They should wait until you die, and provide the team with enemy location information in the mean time.

Do NOT vote against:
*inaccidental TK (run over with vehicle by accident)
*ppl TK back out of revenge (try to differentiate, but this is on their risk anyway)
*ppl who throw a grenade or morter strike into an enemy flag without realizing you are faster then he is. Just bad luck.

Basically, if you see someone with a larger negative score (-3 or more, always at the bottom of your team list), this person is most likely ruining the game for your team so kick him.
Do NOT vote if someone runs you over by accident, even if it was a stupid move.
My plan is so simple an idiot could have thought of it
