In a letter to the Xbox LIVE community, Xbox LIVE's Marc Whitten shared some new features coming to Xbox LIVE in a future update, in addition to those announced earlier at the Xbox Media Briefing.

Here, Marc describes two features that will be very welcome to experienced Xbox LIVE members. Beacons will make it easier to find friends who are interested in playing the same game, while cloud storage for game saves and Xbox LIVE profiles will let you sign into your account from any console, without having to bring your Gamertag and save files along on a flash drive.

  • Beacons. We want to make it easy for you to connect with friends over your favorite games on Xbox LIVE, so we are introducing Beacons to the service. Beacons are a way to tell your Xbox LIVE and Facebook friends that you want to play a game on Xbox LIVE. By setting a Beacon, you tell Xbox LIVE what you want to play. Then, Xbox LIVE lets you know when friends are playing or want to play the same game. With Beacons, no matter what you're currently doing on Xbox LIVE your friends know that it's ok to ask you to play your Beaconed games. Imagine sending out a Beacon to let your friends know you're interested in playing Halo, while watching a movie on Netflix. It's about making it easier for you to share and discover games and multiplayer opportunities with friends on Xbox LIVE.

  • Cloud Storage for Game Saves and LIVE Profile. Here at Xbox LIVE we listen to your feedback. We are making it easier for you to sign into your Xbox LIVE account from any console at any time to access your game saves and full profile, including items such as Microsoft Points to make purchases, Achievements and friends. Cloud storage will allow you to enjoy the same great Xbox LIVE gaming experience even when you're not in your own living room by giving you the option to store your "game saves" securely in the Xbox LIVE cloud instead of on a portable memory unit or your console's hard drive. Gone are the days of "gamertag recovery." Now all you need to do is sign in, no matter where you are!

You'll be able to find your friends, and let them know what you'd like to play.

  • Really liking the Beacon idea, and Cloud Storage? Yesss!

  • i really dont like the idea because i like the way the set up is now

  • this is cool and all but when will xbox let us connet to pc gamer to verus them or get actually internet? i was really hoping for this D:

  • You can't do both console AND cloud saves? It's either or? That's not a good idea. It really should be both.

  • I agree with TenaciousSnake7. The cloud storage should basically be a bi-directional sync with your hard drive. That way, you don't need to be connected to the internet to access the information but you can still access it remotely. Hopefully, this is how Microsoft is implementing it already.

I really like the cloud storage feature since a lot of games are getting more social, especially Kinect party games. If you visit a friend to play Rock Band, Dance Central, Kinect Sports, etc... then you want easy access to your profile so that you can play with your avatar and also get credit for your achievements.

    Bravo on this one, Microsoft.

  • THANK YOU Microsoft! I'm sick of copying my saves to my flash drive just so i can play the game at a friend's! Long Live Xbox LIVE!

  • Will the cloud storage be stored on Skydrive or will it be something like Kinectshare.com.

  • Im not sure what you mean by "or get actually internet" ProjectZombie28, but if you mean that you were expecting an internet browser on the xbox 360 system it wouldnt be good idea. If xbox put an internet browser on the xbox your xbox would be more prone to hacks and viruses. I mean thats how the Playstation network got hacked, or at least thats what I've heard... so in conclusion an internet browser would give us more cons than pros...

  • We'll see more details as we get closer to release, but it certainly seems logical that you'd be able to keep your saves/profile locally as well -- the system still has to accomodate those times you're not connected to live.

  • I am Loving th cloud storage thing!!

  • coud storage integrated with SkyDrive? OR at least has SkyDrive branding... sure hope so

  • I mean if you are going to call something generic like "search" "bing" than you should feature whatever this cloud storage is as SkyDrive

  • cool no flash drives needed

  • i like the idea so whan that come out i wont it but whan i Achievements and gamerscores and i awards are going to be posted up on i facebook and i just wont it to just post up on there not going to kinectshare.com i what to know more about beacons i lil bit understand what its talking about but i dont understand what its really like meaning it will just alart my friends on facebook and xbox live that i am ok to play a game with them or what

  • I'm filled with excitement that you're adding Cloud Storage and Beacons to Xbox Live, but I have something to say about Xbox Live. The Xbox Live Arcade is such a great system for exclusive downloadable games, but I think that the 2 Gigabyte technical restriction should be removed so that game developers would have loads of freedom much bigger games! 2GB for XBLA games still feels too small to me. You created Games On Demand with a different file structure without that restriction almost two years ago, so why couldn't you do a big overhaul for the XBLA file structure?? I really want the 2GB tech limit to be removed so the game developers won't have to deal with that constraint any longer! You made the new disc format for future Xbox 360 retail games, so, how about doing some heavy upgrading to the XBLA file structure via a system update, please? My request is to have much bigger XBLA games, especially for games who heavily support DLC! Am I right? You've always listened to the fans' voices, now hear my voice! Think about it.
