Microsoft should boost the live membership to $70 so we can change our gamertags whenever we wish.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if this happens.   They added Facebook and all those other features for "free" then later raised the price from $49.99 to $59.99 to cover those new free features.  Why should I have to pay extra for features I have and will never use?   That was Microsofts cleaver way of saying "look at all these new features you get for free".  Then later jacked up the price to cover thos new free features.  So the more they add, the higher the price will go.  How about just keeping it at $49.99 for those that are not using those features. Then those that want them can pay $59.99??

    I agree.

If I could have my wasted days back, would I use them to get back on track...?

    Keep searching... keep on searching.

Gamertags should NOT be free.. Why?  people with bannable offences can commit crimes then change it and say it wasnt them and changing tag....Honestly, I am getting tired of people begging for free live or free tags....Get a job or go cut some grass for extra change..

That is not the issue, ontop of other expenses, it is excessive.

  • I don't agree very much.

Did you know it takes a lot to change your gamertag?

The system has to find everything you've posted and change it all.

This also happens with your gamer picture!

  • Think of changing your Gamertag as buying a URL domain name. If I make a mistake, I'd have to pay again. Same goes for Xbox Live. Your Gamertag is a registered name on the service. Plus if name changes were free people would abuse the system like no tomorrow.

  • 1. how is it not your fault? you are supposed to make sure that is the name you want and make sure it is spelled correctly before putting it in. YOU make a mistake therefore it is YOUR fault.

    2. too bad. they are not going to give you special treatment just cuz someone gave you a nickname or you gave yourself a nickname.

    3. that is your own problem. they cant let you change it for free just cuz you hate it. that makes no sense.

so your reasons are completely without logic and are therefore stupid. i had my account going on 4 years now and only changed my name ONCE! i fail to see any reason why they should not make you pay for it just cuz of the reasons you posted. as many others have said, this is a good thing because what if people were changing their names on a constant basis? think of it this way. if someone cheats online and you report them, they can easily change their GT making it more work for the XBLET to do their job. (i know they can just look up the name change, but it would take longer to find the individual). there are many factors of why having the free name changes is a BAD idea.

  • think it has something to do with back up and account management, someone has to go through it all and replace your old GT with the new one

  • I want everything to be free.

  • Level: 1
  • they could just let it be free for gold members and a $10 charge for silver members(maybe once a month for gold members)

  • Level: 6
  • What?

The idea of free name changing would cause havoc to the live servers...

It would make it impossible to get the name you want at all...

  • i somewhat agree that it should be free but instead of having it once every 6 months make it so people can only change their name 2 or 3 times a year for free and if they want to change it more than that then thats when it should be the 800 points

  • This is always a thoroughly discussed topic. As others have suggested, the only way I can see MS making them free (within a time range or not) is if the subscription rate is increased, and they can say it's to compensate for the increase in features on Xbox Live as well.

  • I would pay 800MSP to change my gamertag recording how many sti's I have. Particularly if there were 70 of them.

  • Gah! you kids are a bunch of freakin' babies. If you want to change your gamertag every 10 minutes then you're gonna have to pay the guy that changes the database records for it.

If you don't want to pay $10, then thats simple. DON'T CHANGE YOUR GAMERTAG!

$10 really isn't a lot of money for this. I mean, I have to pay more then $10 to have my phone number changed and I "maybe" do that once every 5 years.

Why do you really need to change your gamertag so much. I mean really?

  • that is true if they made the name changes free they would probably have to raise the price of memberships

  • Do You Realise, How Much Server Space, Microsoft Would Have To Keep Free, For Each Gamertag..???

    1. Your Gamertag Is Active; While Your On XBOX Live! + Rerouting & Accessing Game Servers...

    2. Your Gamertag Is Active; While Your On XBOX Live! Site/s...

    3. Your Live! Email, Is Attached To Your Gamertag Too & Server Sends Notifications To Email etc..

    Among Other Things..

You Need To Wise Up, What Microsoft, Really Does For Us & Realise That There Is A LOT Involved, In Giving Us The Privilige, To Use The Massive XBOX Live! Service That's Enables Us To Play Worldwide...

    ..

Gamertags, Aren't Just For Our Country & Once A Gamertag Is Used, Other People Around The World Can't Use It... It's A Worldwide Gamertag... So Choose Wisely & Don't Make A Mistake & Blame Microsoft Or XBOX Live!, For Your Error...

The Price For A Gold Membership, Is Quite Reasonable.. If You Factor The Maintenance Involved & Employees (WorldWide) That Keep The Service Running & Need To Get Paid & Feed Their Families..

Stop Being So Tight & Deal With It...

  • Microsoft does everything for a reason. I'm almost 100% sure that they have thought about every other way to change this but have figured that the only fair way to settle this and the least stressing and aggravating thing is to make it 800 ms points so everyone who actually wants to change their name gets to with a little price involved in it. No offense to anyone else but the gamertag you have is completely your responsibility and was your choice what it is and if you messed up and don't want it anymore then it was your fault and Microsoft shouldn't have to go out of their way or favor just one person just because they aren't happy.

  • Exactly...

If You Stuffed Up Your Spelling On Your Current Gamertag & Want To Change It... Pay 800 MS Points... You Only Have 2635 Gamer Points Anyway...

Keep Asti70, Until Your Gold Membership Expires... Cancel The Account & Buy A New Gold Membership & Choose Your Gamertag Correctly... Simple...

If You've Gone And Bought Updates For Games & Bought Arcade Games... Just Pay The 800 MS Points... If You Don't Mis-Spell Your Gamertag, You Want Have To Worry In The Future, About Paying 800 MS Points Again... Life Ain't Free, You Know... Deal With It...

I hope you don't mind me asking though but why do you capitalise each word? It makes your posts quite unpleasant to read and people might miss out on the info you post because of that.

  • People keep talking about how Microsoft are doing everything they can, but the bottom line is that Microsoft LOVE money. I have had my gamertag for 3 years and I want to change it but I have no way of adding points to my account even though I can afford it. Yes, Microsoft do a lot for Xbox Live but the truth is making gamertags free one a year or everytime you renew your subsription is easy for them.

1 what if i make a mistake well sorry not my fault

2 what if you had a new nickname sorry pay 800 microsoft points to change your name

3 what if you hate it and you want to change it

    so there are my reasons

come on micosoft make em free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Um, actually it is your fault. Try using that excuse at work, school, etc. and see where that gets you. It is your duty to check if there is any mistakes. So it is 100% your fault if you make a mistake.

  • Level: 5
  • 1. Be diligent & not rush everything & you will not make a mistake..

    2. A "Nickname" is supposed to stick & not be changed on a whim..

    3. You liked it, before you hated it & it will cost you 800 MS Points for your sudden dislike of the Name you chose or rushed in the first place...

    4. Deal with It.. If "one-off" GamerTags were for free & you could just change your mind, your Xbox LIVE account & DLC will go haywire + I could just grab 100+ GamerTags, so no-one could have them etc..

That's not how it works. The system gives you a unique numerical ID as well, and that's what is stored with posts and everything else. Your gamertag is not repeated within their databases, just that numerical ID. Changing your gamertag should only be a matter of updating a single field in their database, and the same goes for gamer pictures. The system does not have to go back and update everything after a change.
