Constant Freezing

  • Ive only had the game since Tuesday, and I only have 6 hours of gameplay. The reason is, my game freezes every 10 minutes (no lie).

The first day it was good for about 2 hours. Then it started to freeze. It started getting shorter and shorter the time i could play without freezing. I have clearing system cache, clearing autosaves and disabling, and attempted to clean my laser on disc drive but I dont have the required wrench to open the xbox. There are no scratches on the disc at all, but every once in a while it says the disc is unreadable instead of just going into a freeze. It happens at any point, loading, in menus, or in game. Its ridiculous. I was wondering if anybody else is having this problem. None of my friends do. I hope its common and there is a patch released that fixes freezing.

  • Mine didn't start freezing until about 45 hours or so in before the patch and I thought the issue may have been adressed in the latest one. But doesn't seem like it as it has frozen several times since during general gameplay and in the loading screens.

I'm not too sure if it could be the reason, but another forum poster stated that increased lengths of continuous play could cause freezing problems. To some extent, I may possibly believe this as a large number of my freezes have happened after playing like 3+ hour sessions.

    Just go hundy on them!

  • My xbox is old, and I think that may be the problem, but no other games freeze as much as skyrim does. I would open it up and clean it and clean the laser on disc drive but i dont have the required wrench. And I havent been able to play for more than 20 minutes at a time, its made buying this game very frustrated as i really want to play it.

  • My game freezes to and there is hardly any scratches on it i even have it installed and still freezes. so im guessing its most likely a bug that has not been fixed yet.

  • Maybe it's older consoles? I have the new console, the black one with the 250GB and the built in Wireless. In almost 100 hours between 2 characters, I have had 3 freezes. There has to be something different somewhere that's causing this. I install to the Hard Drive if that helps any? I'm wondering if for some reason the older consoles just have a problem with Skyrim? You would think that they would have tested on all available models.

  • DarthLama you could be right but my console is brand new and works great just freezes on this game and other games dont have a problem and like i said my disc has hardly any scratches at all and is installed. So i still think its just a bug

  • Just adding another data point -- I have an old XBox360 with the original chip from 2006. I'm deep into the game, level 36, with no freezes or glitches so far. I'm playing from the disc, not from the HD. The game itself seems fine, both before and after Wednesday's update.  Good luck. Please post again if you find an answer to the problems.

If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research.

  • I tried installing to my hard drive and that actually made it worse. As soon as I went to load a game it froze on the loading screen and if not that one then the next load screen there was. Today I was able to play for between half hour and hour before it froze. I actually managed to complete a quest. It froze when I encountered a dragon, a glitched dragon by the way. It was flying all over the place and lagging, flying backwards and into the sky straight up. It was horrible.

My consoles manufacturing date says it was November 21 of 2007, however, It got red rings maybe 2 or 3 years ago and I dont know if it was refurbished or what was done to it.

  • I have had trouble playing it from the disk so I have it installed on both my Xboxs. the one I play with at home and the one I take to work.

The crazy dragon thing sounds like a Patch 1.2 issue. Did it have this problem before the patch? You might want to try clearing your cache to remove the update and see if you can play offline without freezing. You can also just as a test, move your saved games to a flash drive then remove saves from the console and make a new character. Maybe we can narrow it down to rather or not it effects any PC you make or just one specific character. I don't know what any of this will do I'm just trying to brainstorm ideas for you to try. Good luck!

    .

Where exactly do you work? Sounds curious :P

    .

And OP, I'd get a new disk. The same thing is happening here with MW3, though only the disk not registering as playable. No problems with any other game, no scratches on ANY of my disks whatsoever, old console.

    .

Get a new disk (even if you rent one for a few dollars) and see whether the issues still occur.

If I could have my wasted days back, would I use them to get back on track...?

    .

    Keep searching... keep on searching.

  • Mine did freeze sometimes  with the first patch still doing with the new but no so frequent. At least not freezing while getting indoor/outdoor like before.

May the games be with you!

We have already ruled out console versions.  My wife has the brand new GOW3 console and has had quite a few freezing issues with her 360 while playing Skyrim. And thats with only a few hours of gameplay.  My friend also has a brand new slim elite and has had several freezing issues. I have an older 360 and mine has froze about 12 times in 100 hours of gameplay. This game is harder on older 360s but the freezing problem is not console related. Its Bethesda coding.

  • I have the old Elite 120 GB, froze once, then i installed it, no problem since then :D i think it is 1.5 - 2 years old now

  • I have the limited edition Resident Evil 5 Xbox 360 Elite (120 GB HDD) and have 150 hours invested into 1 character (with about 10 saves) and have only frozen up 2 times.  For those who have alot of freezing issues, how many save files do you have?  If have quite a few, maybe you should delete some or move older saves to a USB drive and see if that helps.  You might also want to check your save files (with the 360 memory management) to see if you have any corrupted saves (if so delete them).  Then again, it could just be the coding.  I used to freeze up alot when playing Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I only have about 6-7 files that I save in rotation.    When it gets over 10 files I delete the extras and get back down to around 6-7 again.  And yes my game is installed, and my wifes game, and my friends game.  All installed.  Its the Bethesda coding.

  • Let me state the obvious. If it was the Bethesda coding, we'd ALL have the same problem.  We don't.

If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research.

  • I had about 100 hours played and finished all the main and side story quests, including the Daedric ones, and I never had the game freeze once. I didn't install it to my hard drive because Bethesda came out saying that we shouldn't.

I think that it's got to be the XBox, because like is said above, we'd all be having the problem if it was a coding issue with Bethesda. Mine is a 250GB Slim. Haven't played it on my GF's XBox in the bedroom, but that's a 2009 Jasper model.

  • Mines a 2009 Jasper model; the Resident Evil Red Limited Edition.  I did download it to the hard drive as I do with all my games.

    -

I have about 125 hours in tops; have had it freeze now maybe 8-10 times.  I don't find this to major since I remember Oblivion freezing a lot more than this, probably 5 or more times this amount for me.

    -

I wasn't aware originally that you should delete files and had over 800 saves.  I still didn't have many freeze ups but the waiting to SAVE or LOAD took forever.  Since deleting all of them and now only have 3-5 saves, I have had just as many issues of freezing that I did prior.  Again 8-10 I'm not finding too bad.

  • Well I just opened up my Xbox and the disc drive to clean it out. It sure was dirty, especially the disc drive, so I thought it would surely solve the problem. It turns out it didnt do a damn thing. Nothin different. I froze 4 times in the hour and a half i played. I also tried clearing the cache and playing offline, but it said the saves were from an updated version and I would have to update for it to work.

I think it is the games coding. If a lot of people are experiencing freezing, just at certain degree, then its surely the game.

THROWS OUT HINTS AND I CAN SPIN THE FIGURE ON THE SCREEN...

BUT THE GAME DOES NOT BOOT INTO GAME PLAY.....I HAVE AN OLDER XBOX

BUT I HAVE ZERO TO NONE FREEZING ISSUES..SO I RULED OUT ME HAVING

AN OLDER BOX.....AND SEEING PEOPLE WITH NEWER BOXES HAVE ISSUES

MAKES ME FEEL COMFORT IN IT NOT BEING MY BOX ITSELF BUT THIS GAME

  • Well over the week the problem really diminished, freezing only 5 times max in like 6 hours of gameplay id say. But today I cant  go without 10 minutes (literally) without freezing. I dont know what it is.  Im still trying to get another copy of the disc to rule out that its just the disc. Ill keep this updated.

  • Level: 2
  • This may be very obvious but I haven't seen it mentioned yet.....

To anyone having freezing issues, is your xbox power supply in a well ventilated area? I think most people have their consoles in a good spot, but not everyone knows that the power supply has to be well ventilated as well.

    Just throwing it out there.....

And I have a 250gb slim model, game installed to hd, and I have maybe 1 freeze every 2-3 days. Not a huge issue, but still annoying. And between my wife and I we've put around 200 hours into the game since launch, all on one console.

I am the video word made flesh.

  • I used to get what I thought were freezes about twice or so every play session (3 hours average), but I found if I just wait it out, and then hold the Xbox button to bring up the Shut Down menu, the game decides to wake up. My screen goes black going into and coming out of loading screens a lot, and I used to sit there waiting for it to do something, but nothing happens (no hints, no fog, no spinning item). However, if you wait a bit and then HOLD the Xbox button, for whatever reason, the menu appearing makes the game continue loading.

I don't know if this is the type of freezing you're talking about - I've had my game freeze in the middle of gameplay, but never tried this trick - but it might help someone who gets a hiccup and doesn't want to shut down if they hadn't saved in a while.

  • That is a known spot for glitching, but it's also a spot that goes dark for awhile and you need to wait it out.

I had what appeared to be a freeze at that spot, but waited it out. Literally, when it appeared to freeze, I got up frustrated and went into use the bathroom without bothering to turn off or reset the xbox. Came back about three minutes later and still had a black screen. Then as I was about to hit the power button I thought I heard faint voices... stopped to listen and yes there were voices, few seconds later I saw the game was still running.

  • Level: 3
  • One thing I have found for determining freezes in this game is if I think it has frozen, I hit the xbox button, if I hear the tone, I leave it to work itself through, even if the menu doesn't appear (just like the with the "speedy wait trick"

If I dont hear the tone, then I have assumed that it is a genuine freeze.....

May not be a 100% accurate but it has been fairly useful for me.

  • Try deleting and reinstalling the dlc. That could help fix the problem.
