  • Started the quest you get from reading the book atherium wars and was just wandering, is it worth it.

Also has anyone else seen the headless horseman around solitude?

Also if you find a plant called janis root, its the best poison in the game, eating it will kill you.

Over used not over powered. Shotguns will never be realistic since no one can stand how good they should be.

  • Yes it's worth it you get a crown that lets you have 2 standing stones at the same time.

  • Whats this about a Headless Horseman?

  • Headless horseman?? LOL I don't go to Solitude much. I'll have to hang out there a bit now.

As far as the crown... 2 standing stones at the same time?! That's sweet! Where do I pick up that quest/book?  I think I got a quest from the book recently but not sure if it's that one or not.  What's the quest called? I definitely want to do that one ASAP.

  • I saw the headless horseman near Whiterun the very first time I played Skyrim.

    Previously Jameser78, now TF themed.

  • You also get the choice between a staff and a shield, tho the crown has by far the best enchantment!

  • Level: 1
  • The headless horseman when followed will lead you to Hamvir's Rest which is a graveyard just up the road from Dustman's Cairn where you do the companions quest.  In the graveyard is 3 skeleton and a duager.  On the left side near the back is the horseman's helmet and his weapon.  The helmet is enchanted and there is also a master chest.

  • Is the book located in one area or are there a few copies? I haven't seen this yet but I'm sure i'll come across it at some point, I like to read most books I pick up.

  • Level: 1
  • I have only found the book on a bookshelf in the dawnguard castle.  I have heard that there are other locations as well.

  • Cool thanks. I'll have a snoop around later. :)

  • There's a copy in Fort Dawnguard, The Bards College, Castle Volkihar, Ruunvald and the Hall of the Vigilant.  You actually have to read through the entire book to start the quest.  It doesn't just automatically start when you open it.  The other thing that makes the quest worth it, is that it's the Lost to the Ages quest, which is one of the achievements.

  • Cool, thanks for the extra info. :)

  • I completed that quest yesterday and chose the shield. I guess I didn't understand what the crown did exactly, but now that I know I will choose it for my vampire character. I might go with the steed and lord stones.

  • Still has anyone else found janis root, it does like 800 damage.

  • The only one I've found is what was given in the Brotherhood quest.

  • In have seen about 6 copies but the one in the Dawngaurd castle is next to the enchanting table.

  • Ah, thank you, rma316! Been going crazy trying to figure out why the quest wasn't starting. Thought maybe I had already triggered it but it wasn't in my quest log.  I didn't read through the whole book!

  • ok, went back & read through the entire book - still no quest started.  Can someone tell me the name of the quest, please? What is the quest about? I'm hoping I didn't already do it and sell the reward. >.>  I know I haven't seen a crown that allowed 2 standing stones, though.

  • You would know if you did it as it is a pretty lengthy quest and completing it gets you the achievement.  Are you taking the book after going through all the pages?  Maybe it's a time thing, go through it slower?  Also possible that your game is just goofed up.  Plenty of that going around with the DLC.

  • Crud, I think I took and sold the book from Fort Dawnguard without fully reading it, and now I can't find it.

  • Here is a link to the quest walkthrough from the wiki.  I had to use it for the names of the ruins as my quest markers kept turning off.  As soon as I approached the proper areas though, the marker would come back, so, it's kind of a pain to do the quest.

  • I'm in the middle of this quest myself, my quest markers have a mind of their own as well.  I thought it was just my imagination at first... thanks RMA.

I goofed, somehow I clicked the single star rating for your post as I was trying to get the cursor in the text box to post this reply. I would give it 5 if I could, but I can see now way to re-vote or retract... sorry... :(

    Damn wireless mouse!

Son someday you will meet a girl, you will make her happy, for a short period of time. Then she will leave you to be with new men, men who are 10 times better than you could ever hope to be. These men are called, Marines.

  • No worries.  Shows 5 stars on my screen.  Happy to help with the quest.  Really is a pain when you first leave the ruins and it shows you all the locations, but then after you travel to one, the others all disappear.  I got lucky and remembered where one other was, but, had to look up help for the rest.  Locations aren't exact, took me some wandering around, but, at least I got close.

  • Thanks, jaybgee.  Finally found it there and am almost done with it now. The no quest marker thing is driving me bonkers. Just need to find the forge at this point. I'll be glad when it's over!

Arrrgh!! I'm having the same problem!  I had the quest marker for everything else, but after Katria told me all we need to do now is get to the forge, the marker isn't there! That's frustrating... anyone have any pointers <no pun intended on how to find the forge?

  • Head to Ivarstead, then go south by southeast on your compass.  It should show up for you as you get close.  I don't remember it being too far away.

  • Part of the fun of Lost to the Ages is that it's a scavenger hunt - you get Katria's journal, a few hints and off you go to explore. That's why quest markers will only appear if you've already visited the dwemer ruins beforehand and had them added to your map. Otherwise, you only have Katria's word and her journal to go on.

If you really don't want to bother with any of that, then the wiki lists all of the locations for the shards and the forge and you can click on each location's individual article which will have a screenshot of it on the overworld map so you can pinpoint its location exactly.

I had a quest marker pointing me to the first location, where you first meet Katria.  I went through there with relative ease, got the first piece and upon leaving was given 3 quest markers for the next locations, 2 of which I had already been to.  I opened the map, looked at them, picked the first of 2 that were very close together, and I had already been to, and selected to fast travel there.  I went in the first ruin, got the shard, then my quest marker disappeared.  I left the ruin, made sure the quest was active, but it showed me none of the other 2 locations it showed when I left the first ruin.  I remembered the name of the second, fast traveled to it, and as soon as I landed, it gave me an arrow to the location.  When I left there, I got no indication where to go for the 3rd spot, so, I looked on the wiki and fast traveled as close as I could.  Once I walked toward it, the quest marker appeared.  Same thing happened for the final location.  Marker only appeared when I was close.  Shouldn't be like that, especially when at one point it gave me all 3 locations.
