  • Hearthfire FAQs I've noticed a lot of confused people on the interwebz about the new skyrim hearthfire DLC. To help clear this up I've compiled some of the most common questions that have been asked and I will answer them to the best of my knowledge.
Q: I downloaded the new DLC but nothing is loading when I go into my game and no courier is coming to me. Why?
A: if you downloaded it from within the start menu, you must go to your dashboard and re-load the game. The easiest place to find the courier is in whiterun.
Q: how come I only got 1 letter from the courier about upgrading my breezehome or adopting a child, but not about where to go?
A: this seems to be one of the minor glitches in the game. Don't fret, as all of the DLC content will still be available to you.
Q: where do I go to get the land deeds and how much are they?
A: the 3 towns are morthal, falkreath, and dawnstar. You must talk to the jarls steward and they are 5000 septims each.
Q: the jarls steward(s) won't give me an option to buy land. What gives?
A: as with being able to buy a house in any other town, you must do a favor for the jarl or become thane.
Q: it doesn't show where my plot of land is on my map. Did I even buy anything?
A: yes, don't worry. To find your land, look under the "misc quests" tab and select it, then select your misc missions. It will plop an arrow right where you need to go.
Q: can I put the land anywhere I want?
A: no. All three are predetermined for you.
Q: where are the quarry and clay deposits, sawn logs, and glass and straw at? And where do I get the building materials like nails and hinges?
A: quarries and clay deposits are within a very close proximity to the house. Quarry is a very light grey with white lines (similar to normal ore deposits) and clay is a brown/maroon color on the ground. Sawn logs can be purchased from any saw mill owner. They are 200 septims for 20 logs. Glass and straw can be found in general goods stores only (if you've played oblivion, it's similar to buying furniture), and every once and awhile, out in the wild or caves/dungeons. They will also sell child's clothing and toys. The other building material can be made at an anvil (usually next to the carpenters table) or any smithing pit (can think of the name, drawing a blank). They all take iron ingots and locks take an extra corundum ingot to make. You will make 2 hinges per ingot and 10 nails per, where everything else is 1:1 ratio.
Q: how can I make someone my steward?
A: some followers will be made into stewards once you create the "main hall" part of the house. Bring a follower to the house and they will ask if you want them to be your steward for that house. Not all followers can do this, mainly townsfolk like faendal, and for the most part, no warrior type followers.
Q: what kinds of things can I make for the house?
A: there are 3 options per wing, and 3 wings per house. 3 of the options are for a more homey feel like bedrooms and kitchen, while others can be for the warrior or Mage, like the armory or enchanting wing. Since you have 3 houses, you are able to mix and match what you want.
Q: how do I buy a horse for the stable and animals for the pens?
A: talk to your steward and select "I want to upgrade the house". You can buy a horse, cow, chickens, carriage, and a bard. You can also give him money to buy upgrades or make renovations in your home.
Q: I want to start adopting kids. Where can I find them?
A: the orphanage in riften has a big selection, but each city has a few kids running around after dark that you can adopt. A good time to find them is around 1-2 am when everyone's asleep. Talk to them and you will get the option to adopt them.
Q: how can I find toys for the kids?
A: some toys, like dolls and wooden swords, can be found while dungeon diving. Others can be found in the general goods store after you adopt kids.

  • Nice job, 5 stars.

If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research.

  • Thanks. There seems to be more popping up on here that I need to experiment with to get an answer to. But if anyone has any other ones, feel free to add.

  • One question I had that I couldn't discern from your post: Can you buy the materials that you listed as being able to be forged, i.e. the hinges / locks / nails, or do you have to forge them?

    Thanks for the Q/A.

  • I believe they all need to be made at the anvil.

  • Level: 5
  • They can ONLY be made at an anvil. I would have said otherwise if they could be bought. I think it's the only thing in this DLC that you can make, outside of pieces of housing and furniture, with materials. I haven't discovered them in shops or dungeons.

  • Are there new iron deposits by the house like the stone and clay, or is the only way to get iron by mining ores at existing deposits and smelting or buying at shops?

  • Level: 2
  • There is one iron deposit by the Lakeview manor, but it isn't endless like the clay and rock. I find it easiest just to buy iron ingots and ore.

  • Level: 5
  • That's what I've been doing. I usually sell every little thing I don't need right now to buy ores and ingots. I feel like a crack head lol.

  • quick question i see that you say you can find toys in dungeons and the like but one of the loading screen tips says you can make toys and clothes for your kids anyone have any idea how to do that if you can i know the loading screen tips arent always.... "accurate"

The time has come for you to decide, if you want to leave it all behind,

to open the gate into my world, will you follow me?

  • Level: 2
  • I haven't seen the option to do that. But it might depend on what you build first. Like for example if you build an oven you can then bake pies and whatnot. Perhaps there is toy building option if you build the right item(s) first?

  • Level: 2
  • hmmm that would make sense i will have to look into that in my houses

  • For some reason the Jarl of Dawnstar won't acknowledge me ending the nightmares, any way to fix that?

  • Does anyone know if cutting your own logs works?  The saw mills give you the option to cut your own, and I've tried that a few times but I never get any additional sawn logs at the build sites.

  • No, saw mills only sell you sawn logs. If you see a big pile of logs by your house, that is your sawn log pile and you can see they are full trees. The dialog "can I cut my own logs" will just lead to the mill owner yelling at you.

  • I've completed the Nightmares quest but he won't acknowledge it. All he says is something along the lines of "You're not as dumb as you look." I've also completed 3 misc quests (sell ore, invest in the alchemy store and find the book) and still nothing.

Also, I've already purchased my second plot of land and I've completed building my second house.

I'll try complete the Civil War quest tonight and see what happens...

  • I would, since that will overthrow the current jarl. It might just work. I'm also assuming you're trying to get into a convo with him, but it's not going in like normal (zooms in on person and gives options for convo)

  • Okay so I completed Civil War quest line, replaced Dawnstar's Jarl and as soon as I spoke to her, the option to become Thane appeared! Thanks for the help! :D

I've finished building my third house, now to collect books...

  • No problem. I had a feeling that may have been the problem. Glad to know it worked out for you.

  • I can't find the toys anywhere. A few of the general goods merchants sell clothes for kids but I can't find a freaking doll. I found a wooden sword once in Rorikstead in a chest inside Sissel's house but I had to reload and when I went back it was gone.

  • Level: 5
  • Most of the ones I found have been in dungeons. I've also seen a few in general stores too, but I have had a few times where they didn't sell any glass or straw along with any kids items. Just gotta be patient.

  • I haven't been in any dungeons or anything since I downloaded Hearthfire so that explains it, and I've only been to two general goods merchants so far. Thanks.

  • Some stuff didn't show up for me right away either, but I have seen it in general goods stores too. First there was glass and straw. After a few visits I started seeing clothing and finally last night I saw a doll. It's like it slowly starts to rotate into their inventory or something. Also saw most, if not all of this at Belethor's in Whiterun.

  • How many kids can you adopt per house? Are the plots of land in easily accessible areas? Just wondering because I'm about to pay out 400 points and get my Skyrim on.

  • You can only adopt two kids total. Not per location, but total.

  • I found a doll last night in a chest at the inn in Falkreath, I stole it and it won't let me give it to my kid. Are we not allowed to give them stolen items or what?

  • why would you want to give stolen items to them?

  • I was excited about Hearthfire until the Lakeview Manor glitch. Now, I won't be playing at all until there is an update.

  • Haha because it's the only doll I've found! If I find a merchant who sells them I'll buy one but in the meantime...they're getting whatever the hell I find.

  • I already gave the girl a doll and she's asking me to get her a doll.

    She's a true collector.

  • If you have a stolen doll or toy sword you cannot give it to your children however if you are a member of the thieves guild just sell it to the fence at the ragged flagon then buy it back. It won't be stolen anymore then you can give it to your kids. It worked for me with a doll and wooden sword

  • Thanks! I'm home sick today so I might actually get a chance to try that out.
