  • Like the title says, We pay for xbox live, why are there so many ads strung across the dashboard ?. If you are gold members, there should be no ads,or at the very least less than silver subscribers.

  • Because Microsoft like to make money is the simple answer and know they can get money by placing advertisements on the dashboard, whether they be from third parties or for their own products and services.

  • The ads don't harm your experience any and 99% of them are Feature related.

I don't understand how you can complain about them, really.

  • Seriously Temhotabot? All i've seen you do is rag on people who are trying to have a say, if you like the ads everywhere fine but dont't act like a jerk. Just remember that the original idea of paying for xbox live gold was a way of paying the costs of maintaining the service itself, it worked fine without the ads, now they are here we find are still paying just as much. Only now advertising litterally dominates the dashboard.

@Skillet: Feature related ads or not I counted 6 resident evil ads over all the screens, ads for a console which i already own and ads for music i  cant stand, thats half my problem with them. I've posted elsewhere several times saying that if they are going to force ads into our "Xbox experience" then atleast tailor them to the person, If you have ever signed up for a hotmail account in the old days it gave you a big list of boxes to tick for newletters covering many different topics like cooking/automotive/gaming and so on, and they would appear in your inbox, I would be fine if they did something like that. They could send a checklist to my email that would be later linked to my gamertag and ask what genre of games i like or what styles of music i like and so on.

  • I honestly feel like they do make me not even want to turn on my xbox. I have a hard enough time concentrating on stuff at work, this is just an insane mess to deal with. It's too much stimulation. It's off putting, noisy and bad. It takes a while to figure out, and once I did, I still didn't like it. It's my opinion, but I still feel like it's valid. Stuff like this gives me headaches. Maybe because I'm an old guy, but even so. I'm not a fan.

  • OMG. There are so many ads on the Dashboard I can't find the Play Game Tile...!

Let's see, on the Home Tile there is one adverts for intel but it is gaming related since you can win MS points...Wow, that is such a distraction.

No adverts on the Bing Tile or the Social Tile.

Now on the Games Tile, Oh boy, another advert for intel. Oh my, I can't believe I spent so much money on XBL to see this.

TV/Movies Tile, Uh oh, one State Farm advert. Better get the mob together...

Music Tile, Oh dear, another intel advert...end of the world now.

Apps Tile, video advert for Verizon.

So let's count how many adverts total on the Dashboard, one/two/three/four/five...Holy Cow! Five adverts! What was MS thinking! How dare they obstruct my Dashboard like that!

I see more adverts in a 60 minute TV Show than what we see on the Dashboard. Get over it people.

Oh and in case any of you missed it, this post is full of sarcasm.

  • Just because the advert is for a Microsoft product does not mean it is not an advert. Are you genuinely telling me that you think that huge square in the middle of Home is not an Advertisement?

  • completely dodge the point we are all trying to make....yea that's a good arguement

  • ive got an ad for love film on nearly every page!

it would be better if say for silver members they get the ads but gold members who pay for it dont.

as far as the home page goes, it would work better if you could customize the tiles to have your installed apps or games you have installed to drive, arcade games, short cuts to other places like profile or avatar accessories etc.

so it truly is a home page.

as it stands now it just looks like a zoomed in mess.

thats only if you can download it!

  • I genuinely don't get why people don't think the other squares are adverts. I mean according to Tem's definition even the one in the bottom right would not be classed as an advert since currently on my dashboard is for LoveFiLM, which is an app available on the 360.

  • The tiles I consider an advert are the ones that actually say ADVERTISEMENT underneath them. Otherwise the rest of the alleged tiles are just links to other products/services offered within XBL. Not a very big deal but people act like it is the end of the world...

  • Level: 5
  • The only way to get rid them. Is to make advertisement illegal  in all media. So you can stop crying. And we speend more then we paying in all thoese media stuff that out there. You cable bill  instead being $127. It will be like $1900.57. Becoues to pay high price to carry all your fav tv station on one bill.  And that not inculding the pay channle. And if we get to that. That be over 2k a month.  So pass this law and injoy price hick bill every month from poeple like charter cable. So haved a nice day.

  • Well then comes my argument about having a customizable dashboard. If I want to use the other features I am perfectly able to find them on my own, I don't need a bunch of junk on my dashboard. All I want on my dashboard is what I use my Xbox for, it is a "personal gaming experience" after all isn't it?

  • Level: 1
  • As a gold member I'm willing to pay more for the service if that's what is needed for it to be a viable service. If i download an app to my phone, I'll pay for no ads over a free app every time. How about a platinum member for an ad free experience? I have 8 gold memberships I pay for in this house and would gladly pay a little more to have the experience I desire.

I agree with you 100% that it is in no way the end of the world, not important at all in the grand scheme of things.

However what is the difference between the large square on tv & movies advertising The Avengers and the second from left bottom square advertising Netflix?

Both are services available on the console, both require a fee to access the content. In fact the only real difference between the two is that one, Netflix, has Advertisement written underneath it.

Why does that Avengers square not count as an advertisement for the  Xbox Video service but the Netflix square does?

Sorry Tem, usually I find myself agreeing with you but on this I think you are way off. Just because something doesn't say advertisement does not mean it isn't one. After all, as mentioned before Netflix is a service offered over Xbox LIVE, just like Xbox Video.

  • Temhotabot, This is a feedback forum for people to post feedback about the xbox and its services, why come here and troll people for having their say, if you like the ads good for you but dont be a jerk to everyone who doesnt, your just diluting the thread with your crap, If you want to discuss the dashboard find a forum that isnt for feedback. I've seen you in heaps of threads and you are always being a knob, if you have something worthwhile to contribute then fine but otherwise find somewhere else to vent your frustratons

  • There are way too many advertisements - both tiles that say "advertisement" and otherwise.  It is seriously out of hand.  At least with the last dashboard it cycled them and didn't take up as much screen real estate.  Now all the ones that cycled are in your face all at once.

  • I'm giving my feedback. People spend way too much time complaining about adverts. Adverts are common place in this society, they are everywhere and aren't going anywhere, hence the increase in them over the years. And the fact that we pay for XBL and are subject to them is completely irrelevant. There are dozens of other services out there that use the same tactics and they charge people for it, just like MS. But no one seems to complain to them about it....

  • Level: 1
  • There's nothing else I pay a subscription for that throws advertisements in my face that are unrelated to the reason I'm paying. When I first got XBL there were no ads, now there is and I (we) don't like it. Anything that I am a free member of or any apps I have downloaded that are free all offer a "no ad" experience if you pay, why should XBL be any different?

  • Level: 1
  • I also agree that we are paying for the service, not the ads..  Typical software is then free if supported by ads.  But will have a pay version that removes ads.  That is the norm.

Most of the ads are to sell a product.  Only few are advertising a feature.  Most are advertising a game to get you to buy the game.  Some are current events like the presidential debates.  Some are for services that the Xbox now works with which is trying to get you to buy something.

I could see the current ad space being used as ads for silver members.  For gold members something a little more relevant like gaming news.

  • I find the new dashboard ridiculous. Why is it that the largest tile on the Home tab is one of those "links to other products/services offered within XBL" when the Xbox 360 is a GAMING console? The "Play Game" tile is tied for the smallest on the Home tab and there are at least four other "links to other products/services offered within XBL" surrounding the large central one. The same issue affects the Games tab, although not to the same degree. The only tab I found acceptable was the Social tab; there was a distinct lack of "links to other products/services offered within XBL" added to it and it actually seemed to improve on the old Social tab. And honestly, I don't care about all those Apps / Music / etc. tabs, so I won't complain about them. As long as I don't have to look at them, I'll be happy.

I certainly hope that Microsoft fixes the overuse of "links to other products/services offered within XBL", or at least make it so that I don't have to look at them. I would rather go straight to the game when I turn on the Xbox than be forced to look at "links to other products/services offered within XBL".

  • as a gold member it would have been better to turn the ads off, even the ads for love film etc, not everyone wants to see them.

i dare say the ads you get in the states are different to here in the uk.

on my home page right now i have an ad for men in black 3, kinect central and some sort of halloween thing?

at one point in the music tab i had an ad for a car???

many argue its a media machine games, music and video.

this is fine but at least give those people who want it for just games have the ads for just games and gaming news. not everything even if you dont want it.

just a fun example here i have a site called the bbc website as my homepage for those not in the know it covers everything from news to film/tv  and music, sport etc etc. i can take off what i dont want i.e. customize it.

    oh and its free!

to cap it all some people are having a nightmare time just downloading and using it, now you cant tell me something has gone wrong somewhere?

a parting thought not related to above.

me and a workmate were talking about the recent dashboard update, he said to me.

"have you noticed how dashboard now looks alot like windows 7 mobile homescreen"

i hadnt, so i checked lots of little boxes.

    he added

"ive had a windows 7 mobile it either would crash after an update or wouldnt load my homescreen"

  • DaMunchiesGotMe yes there is. Like cable and satalaite TV. There is ad's and we pay. When you pay for cable doesn't means the station make it ad free for you.  got the *** off the XBOX. And watch TV for five hours on cable and sat. You will find out they have them even yhou pay for it. And right now I seeing a ad on TV now.

  • Slissors ou can do that. By change the seting to play disk when booted the system. And then you do not haved to see the ad. It there. It in the seting. So you just do that. And don't say I do not want do that. Becoues that only way to do it. Or do what i sayed. And make it illegal to haved ads on all media. And MS will go to persion to haved ads in a US fedal persion..  In other words. Ask the persident of united states to stop this happen ever again. Becoues if there a laws aginest ad's in US law book. MS  obay by that law.

  • i also hate the way it covers all the screen and totally hides any theme you might have had on there. devlopers will stop themes and micrograb will lose even more money than they will with win 8.

i want to go back to the original dash, not this blocky advert loaded pile of rubbish. it might be about content, but if i wanted to know something i would look for it.. i hate having anything rammed down my throat.

  • To everyone who dont know it, EVERYTHING is a Advertisement!

The whole world is one! What do you do when you walk out of your door? Or watch TV ( that you pay for too, I guess) ?? You close your eyes so you dont see advertisements??? You do know that the "game infos" you wanna have on the dash, are also just ADVERTISEMENTS! I mean you play Xbox, you wanna have "news about games" (ads)

Whats the problem? The whole thread make no sense. Did anyone of you guys ever saw that? ;)

Well, thanks for entertaining me with those threads :)

  • You know what? I've actually decided to withdraw my previous statement. I have since gotten used to the new dashboard and realised that it actually isn't that bad. The only thing I find bad now is arguments that "advertisments are everywhere, therefore like them'. Seriously, that is terrible logic. I don't mind the new dashboard, but your logic is abysmal.

    People want to be informed.

That doesn't mean they want the adverts, highlights, information panels, or whatever you wish to call them, to be the most prominent part of the dashboard.

  • If some of you are looking for a discussion this might not be the place, this is a feedback section for those us who would like let xbox know what we like or dislike about the latest update so they can hopefully improve upon the service we pay for. Some say ads are everywhere and we have to deal with it, but i remember when xbox was an ad free experience that i was happy to pay for. We pay the sme price as before yet we are now stuck with a cluttered mess of ugly green boxes. The themes people have payed for are now hardly visible unless your on the friends/social tab and even then it is still obscured. So instead of arguing with those of us who dislike it and treat us in a condescending manner, why not just move on and let the company who did this tell us why or how they will/will not change it. Unless you work for xbox or have some similar feedback regarding the topic of this thread there isn't really any reason to reply

I agree.I think the xbox should be more like the PS3.They are free and have no ads at all. Also why are the themes cut off on xbox.On the Ps3 you can view themes before purchase and you can see the whole theme.

  • FEEDBACK - I do not remember agreeing to advertising being posted on my dashboard when I paid for the Gold membership.  Maybe I missed it, however, every other pay service I use removes the advertising.  Let's remember that this is Microsoft and like Congress they haven't listened to their constituents in years.  And like a politician, Microsoft is greedy.

Now there may be some out there that like the ads, so be it.  But there are those of us who feel that if we pay for the service we should not be seeing ads.

Those of you who seem to feel the need to get outright rude and disrespectful defending the ads really need to find a life because flaming people because they don't like the ads would get you barred from other forums, or as us old-timers called them BBS's.
