Kinect Voice Command "Open Tray" from the hub

This command does not work from the xbox hub when you have a game/dvd in the tray.  You can play the disc, but you cannot eject it.  This is infuriating as the whole point of the voice command is to make it easier to change games/dvds on the fly.  The command should not work only when you have an empty tray.  Since you have to put discs in (even when the game is loaded to the hard drive, sigh) this needs to be addressed.  There should also be voice commands built in for the dvd player, not just my netflix account.  I see the potential with kinect, but it doesn't seem to make things easier than a controller.  I have seen several other posts in regards to this, so I know I am not alone.

  • Same problem, saying 'Xbox open tray' does not eject the disc tray.  It either searches Bing for some useless crap, or tries to show some game info for a game I do not have in the tray, or other random uselessness.  Why is this command listed on the official Xbox Kinect page support.xbox.com/.../control-your-xbox-360-with-your-voice and yet does not work?

  • I've read in a few places that you can only eject the tray if there is no disc already in the tray.  You have pretty much already answered your own question.  :)

That seems somewhat pointless to have it that way, but I guess that's how it is.  It leaves ejecting and closing the tray better suited to the controller, even with an expensive Kinect.

  • Having an open tray command is a moot point as you have to be standing in front of the xbox to put the new disc in/take the old one out anyway.  Seeing as how you're there, it's easier to just push the eject button.

  • Seriously man? Of course you're going to agree with them hence you an XBOX AMBASSADOR. We want to have it open by the time we get there. Why even have a play button. Having that is a moot point as you are using a controller to play the game so why not just press A. I mean common you need to argue against people who payed for a service and expected a feature to work as it was intended.

  • It could be a protection feature. How would you like it if someone decides to tell the xbox to open the tray in the middle of a game? All progress lost! Terrible, terrible, terrible.

    So, could be by design.

  • Raett you are correct, it is in fact for the users protection.

Also if you were to have the tray randomly open during gameplay it could cause damage to the system, game disc, or even corruption of the data or profile.

Granted some games disable kinect voice features so that would be a "moot" subject, however it is for protection against those that do allow voice control.

  • Simple solution... only allow voice command to eject disc when at the dashboard. And to the person who says it's easier to push the eject button, why is there a controller command to eject the disc? Anything I can do with the controller on the dashboard I should be able to do with voice commands. Also, why allow us to open and close an empty tray with voice if pushing the button is easier? This was just a bad design, if it wasn't a bug.

  • You young kids and your "easy" way of doing things.

Why when I was your age I had to walk the 4 feet to the tv, change the channel, and walk the 4 feet back.

  • Your a horrible ambassador if your going to say that about gamers. That or a horrible representative. I would not like someone representing my company, telling my faithful customers to lose the gut and suck it up.

See, when I was your age, fantasy books with science like Dune, were not that popular, and a TV series called Star Trek (not sure if you heard of it), and movies like Star Wars really helped push the human imagination. So when a new device that helps recognize your face, movements, and i am sure there are more pssiblities, make it close to Star Trek/War/Dune.

So Senior Ambassador, it will not take anyone's experience from getting up and pressing that cool button (which if someone or something bumps into can still ruin the game experience!!).

So chillax yo, don't attack people yo. Honestly, we just need an answer to know if this is a bug, coming soon feature, or some type of explanation.

  • BlinkeredSteak1 we have not yet heard if there are any new updates coming to the Kinect with regard to the speech recognition. However, Microsoft recently added a new app called "Voice Studio" which they are using purely for speech recognition data. The user is required to say different phrases while game sounds/music/tv show dialogue plays in the background. It would appear that Microsoft is attempting to make the speech recognition better by finding out how to filter out background noise while accurately executing a command.

To everyone else: Please do not assume that Xbox Ambassadors will always take the side of Microsoft. We realize that there are tons of things that Microsoft could do better with the Xbox 360, Live, and Xbox accessories (i.e. Kinect). We are XA's because we enjoy helping people resolve their Xbox issues.

  • @Blinkered - thanks for your input (and I have heard of Star Trek - I enjoyed watching it when I was a kid :)).  However, if you have a problem with my posts please feel free to report them by clicking on the report post icon under my post (it looks like a circle with a line through it).

    Have a nice day.

  • The voice commands work so rarely for it I really don't even try anymore.

  • It is not perfect and it messes up on some words but when I play Skyrim it doesn't usually mess up so bad. I mumble a lot because of a speech disorder and it still reads me quite good if I stop and speak loudly and enunciate.

Ch0zy mentioned a social app called voice studios. It helps sends data about members of your family who uses speech recognitiion. So using that app will help improve it.

Lastly, make sure to use the tuner and see if your in a room with bad background noise. When all my roommates are in the same room it can barely hear me.

    Hope I help!
