Hard Drive Transfer doesn't work

Answered (Verified) This question is answered

I've been trying for nearly a week to transfer the data from my old 360 Elite to my new Star Wars Xbox. The first, used, cable I got didn't work, so I figured it was busted, after reading the forums. However, the brand new cable I got doesn't work, either. I did everything the instructions said to do. I have the latest updates for Xbox. There is no reason I can see that it doesn't work, but it doesn't. I traded in my Elite to help pay for the new Xbox, so I can't just use a USB to slowly transfer everything. Does anyone know why it might not work? Is there anything else I can do?

  • There is no reason that if you followed the instructions exactly how it says that the data migration isn't working. The only thing I can suggest is to call support 1-800-4MY-XBOX and they will stay on the phone with you until the problem is fixed or they will deem your console needs repair. Myself i would not send in a limited edition Xbox in for repairs as you will not get the same one back!!!!! So if XBOX support can not fix this problem I would return the new system you bought and get a new one. Are you getting any kind of error codes? If so, what are they.

Incorrect - they have to send you the model that you sent.

So if I sent in a 360 with HDMI port I am going to get one back with a HDMI port.

Send back a black elite, going to get back a black elite.

Same with limited editions, MW3 will get a MW3 console back etc..

If you have a Signed console - you will not get that back - but the is more the exception.

Tonia - do you have a 20gb drive that you are trying to transfer from?

These small drives seems to have a problem transferring with the cable at times.. There is no fix that I know of other then to move everything that can not be downloaded from your History via USB.

  • ^^^^ not incorrect if you think it's incorrect start a thread and ask how many people sent in their XBOX's for repair and got a different one back and I think the numbers will amaze you. Plus just do a Google search and see the results for yourself

When you send the console in, you never receive the same console you sent in. The send you another refurbished console to get you back to gaming as soon as possible. It would take too long to repair your actual console due to a long line of people sending theirs in as well. And yes you receive a one month card for live gold subscription. Funny you mention that if you send in a black elite you get a black elite back, as I sent in a black elite and got a white xbox back w/ the HDMI cable.

I have sent in three different consoles and I have never received the same one back. I mean no offense but you are an ambassador of XBOX. I would assume you would do a little research before you post incorrect on someone's post and the poor person loses their limited edition XBOX.

  • I have sent in 4 consoles and have received the correct consoles each time.

I have helped friends send out multiple consoles, and they have all received the correct one. Black elite, and a MW2 console and each got the correct refurbished one back.

Google was unable to find the topic, do you have one you could reference?

If you send out a model you should get the same model - That is the point of warranty.

They can upgrade the model, so if you have an arcade with out HDMI they can send out a model with HDMI.

  • ^^^ I do not disagree with the fact that you should get the same one back. I found it pretty easily on Google and I know you can do the same. Plus there is a lot of refrences just in the Xbox forums how it talks about when you send out an Xbox they send you a refurbed one back to keep the line moving. Please let me make a correction. I said when you send out consoles you never get the same one in return and that is absolutely false. And I am sorry I said that. But there is plenty of people who do not get the same ones in return. All I was trying to say to Tonia is if it is an option to bring it back to the store and get a brand new one then do so. If it's not an option and your console needs repair then it needs repair and you would have to send it in. In no way was I implying to have it fixed somewhere else. If a console needs repair Microsoft is the only way to go. i would just hate to see a person not receive the same limited edition that they paid more money for.

And JV in no way did I mean you any disrespect and I hope you did not take it as such.

  • Nope none taken :)

Yes I was thinking that too - if it was a brand new console then he should have taken it back to the store - but got caught up in the other topic.

Should let the OP get back to us and see if there was a resolution.

  • I'm having this exact same problem, Star Wars xbox and everything the HDD just doesn't appear in the storage section and says it needs to be formatted if I try to select, it just says it's a USB device. So far it just seems like I'm screwed which is a lot of garbage considering I was near the end or post game on so many games that I now have to start over.

  • If I may ask if in case you are still having problems, by any chance when you purchased your cable, did you get the CD with the software that you need to be able to run the transfer. Most do not realize and if I am wrong someoen correct me please, but you need the software with the usb cable in order to do the transfer.

  • Desolation Mike do not use that cable.  Knock off 3rd party cables will ask to format your hard drive rendering it a 16gb usb device.  You need to make sure that you buy an official Microsoft branded cable from a reputable vendor.

  • I am having the same problem pretty much as Desolation Mike... I needed more storage so I got a 60gb refurbished external hard drive. I didn't know how to transfer the content, so I got a flash drive and tried to put it on there then replace the external hard drive with the new one and transfer it onto it... but now it says the flash drive isn't formatted and if I format it, it will get rid of everything on there including my siblings' stuff.. Please Help!!!!

  • Hey there Harkenco! Unfortunately if a USB device is no longer accessible, there isn't a way to recover the content from it. I recommend trying a different USB device and formatting it according to these steps (forums.xbox.com/.../153178.aspx). Also, if you just copied this data to the USB, then it still should be on the old Hard Drive for you to copy again. Let me know if that helps, thanks!
