Kinect Microphone does not work for PrivateChat/Video Kinect/Voice messages

OK so this is driving me crazy and I don't know why it does not work. I am going to be 100% clear about the issue and everything I have tried.

I have a kinect and want to use Video Kinect with my family who are in London who also have a kinect but  we are not able to get audio working and it is proving impossible to locate the cause of the problem. We both setup the Kinect with audio calibration and making sure the microphone is on but while it works for me - my family's Kinect will not work for voice messages or chat. It WILL work for their voice commands - the Kinect is able to respond to their voice commands so it is clearly detecting audio. But when using Video Kinect or trying to have a Private Chat, I cannot hear them. They can hear me through their speakers so I believe my end is setup correctly. I have also made sure that my Preferences are set to Play through Speakers.

As a base test I asked them to record an audio message and play it back but it does not record which leads me to believe that is is specifically the Chat/Voice aspect of it is not working.

i have gone through every step on this troubleshooting page (http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-live/connecting/parties-voice-chat) without success.

Under Settings - Preferences - Voice - for both of us it is set to "Play through Speakers'.
Under Settings - Kinect -  for both of us it says "Sensor ON; Chat Microphone ON; Speech Recognition ON"
When I go to Chat&IM  - for both of us it says Kinect Microphone ON

I have turned off all of those settings and turned them back on and asked my family to do the same to ensure that they are definitely set to ON.

We have gone through the Kinect Audio Tuner together - it is able to pick us up saying One - Two - Three etc and when asking if want to use it for Party Chat we say YES. For both of us, it has given us the message that the Kinect is setup to communicate for through its microphone for chat and games. Voice Commands for both of us work fine.

I asked them to test it using the Xbox Headset that came with my original Xbox - this DOES work - when they plug it in then I can hear them through my speakers if they talk directly into the microphone. But obviously that is one person at a time -  when they take it out the Kinect does not pick up their voice. I asked them to check that all the settings for the Kinect Microphone are on both before and after using the headset and according to the settings the Kinect Microphone is on.

I am completely at wit's end - I do not know what to do to get this to work and it is so frustrating that it is proving so difficult. Any advice would be much appreciated. How can I get the audio to work??

  • Hey there Munkee! So it sounds like your console and sensor are working just fine, but your family's sensor, despite the options being set properly, are unable to communicate with you in chat. How about we have you and your family check their Privacy settings to see if communication is disabled on either end. You can find this under Settings Hub > Privacy > Change Settings > Customize > Voice and Text & Video Communication. Make sure these are enabled and see if that helps. Let me know, thanks!

  • Hi no this is something that was already checked - all the privacy settings are setup so that we should be able to communicate. I don't think it is something as simple as that as I have tried every step on the Xbox support page which includes that suggestion but it doesnt help. Anything else that you think might be the case?

  • Thanks for checking on that setting Munkee! Can they send voice messages using their Kinect sensor? Are they able to do this Kinect chat with anyone else? Are you able to successfully video chat with other users as well?

Finny: We would like for you to create your own post detailing your exact issue so we can better assist you. Thanks!

  • Munkee's original post states that attempting to send a voice message using the Kinect sensor fails.  Quote: "As a base test I asked them to record an audio message and play it back but it does not record which leads me to believe that is is specifically the Chat/Voice aspect of it is not working."

I am also having the exact same issue.  The reason I will not create a new thread is because the steps and issues described above are exactly the same as I am experiencing attempting to voice chat with another user in Arizona.  I have not yet had a chance to ask my dad if his XBox is behind a NAT.  I hope that it is not that because going through the trouble of explaining port forwarding to my dad is the stuff of nightmares.

My last troubleshooting step with my dad was to create a party wherein only the two of us were in the channel.  Where I could see that the speaker icon next to my gamer picture was indicating sound was being sent (and he could here me), my dad's speaker icon was indicating that no sound was heard (and I could not hear him).  Again, voice commands work so the microphone isn't broken.

Thanks,  any additional troubleshooting steps (not found elsewhere in this post) would be greatly appreciated.

  • I had a similar issue and found out that my controller thinks it has a headset plugged in. I would go back to the preferences and see if it has turned itself back to using the headset. If it has changed it back to using a headset then the way I have resolved it is to change the option for the headset back to using speaker, then exiting the settings and turning off the controller immediately.

  • FrightfulPaper that did not work - that is one of the first thing i made sure was checked because it works with the headset and when I removed the headset I made sure that it was changed back to the Kinect Microphone and not the headset.

Mister gwyther - I appreciate your help but please can you fully ready my original post before making suggestions as both things you have suggested I have already indicated do not work. I have put as much detail as possible there so that people relying have the full picture.  this is not a simple case of privacy setting that I forgot to enable or not activating the microphone - I have been through every single setting on the Xbox system setting and experimented with it all and made sure the appropriate settings are on but it does not work.

I think if I can find out why they cannot record voice messages with the kinect that will solve the underlying problem. Any suggestions how to narrow down the causes of this not working and solutions?

As always - appreciate any assistance

    Thanks

  • Oh and forgot to mention - no I've not had a chance to test this with anyone else because none of my other friends on my friends list have a Kinect

  • I am having exactly the same issue, and have tried all the settings as well.   Would greatly appreciate some advice.

  • Hey again Munkee! I'm sorry for not reading your post fully. I would like to continue trying to assist you with your issue if I may. It would be helpful in narrowing down the issue if there was someone else you could both try chatting with over Kinect. If that is just not possible, your parents could try getting a replacement Kinect sensor from the retailer (depending on exactly how long ago it was purchased and their return policies). Worst case, they're back where they started, but there may be some odd issue with the sensor itself. Please let me know if either of these suggestions are possible. Thanks!

  • So I came home to visit my family and played around with their Xbox and finally found an answer! And it is so stupid that this is the case but here goes-

Turns out that using a wired controller forces the Xbox to only accept headset input for voice chat - I disconnected all wired controllers and started using a wireless one and voila I was able to start recording voice messages using the Kinect!!

I think this is the fundamental issue as to why it wasn't working in video kinect also so I'm sure that when I go back to the US and chat with my family in London it will now work.

I cannot believe that Microsoft had made a system with such a frustrating and stupid loophole so as to cause such an issue with no answer but hopefully this should help the rest of you who have experienced issues. Please test and see if using wireless controllers resolves it for you and please post here if it works so that we can mark this question answered and help other users.

And Microsoft - please either fix this problem or add it to your troubleshooting page!

  • Wow, I don't know if we ever would have gotten to that one! Can you confirm that it is all wired controllers, or just this one? Perhaps it has a faulty headphone jack that always thinks there is a cable plugged in, rather than a console-based issue with Kinect. Either way, I'm glad to hear you and your folks are up and running. Cheers!

  • We found out the answer last night. The wireless xbox controller that was being used was causing the kinect microphone to mute when using chat or sending a message and adding voice. We tried using a different controller and that worked. So for some reason after using a headset attached to the wireless controller is muting the kinect microphone for chat. So the question is, is there any way of unmuting the kinect microphone when using chat when an xbox controller is wirelessly connected that has had previously a headset attached to it??
