People are connecting to my invite-only Xbox live parties, without an invite

Sorry if this isn't the right forum for this but here is the exact scenario that I have faced for the last two evenings:

1) I create an open Xbox live party

2) One of my friends (lets call him A) joins the open party

3) I then make the party invite-only and then I "Appear Offline"

4) A friend (let's call him B) on A's "Friend list" goes to "Social" on his xbox dashboard, then "Friends" and then "Parties", selects the party A is in (which happens to my invite-only party) and then simply joins it.  He is given the option to join a party that is invite only.

I couldn't believe it so I had him repeat this multiple times last night.  At first I thought it might just be a glitch with the party last night but it happened again tonight.

What am I missing here?  No one is inviting B to the party and yet he is able to join.  B happens to also be on my friends list but since I appear offline he can't really see who is in the party with A just that someone is there.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Thank you.

  • Hey there Entropy! Are you certain that your friend isn't inviting this player instead of him just joining on his own? Also, have you tried creating a new party with just yourself in it, then setting it to invite only, and then inviting your friend to see if that makes a difference? Let me know, thanks!

  • Yes I am sure he isn't being invited by my friend.  At first I thought they may be playing a prank on me but then I talked to both of them and confirmed that he is able to join without any invites.  It has happened multiple times on different days even when my friend (person A above) isn't at his xbox at the time.  I have not tried creating a new party with just myself in it, setting it to invite only and then inviting my friend.  I shouldn't have to do that but I will try and see if that makes any difference and update this thread.  FYI, this is new behavior since the revised metro dashboard.  We never had these issues prior to this.  Thank you.

  • Hi Mister Gwyther,  I tried what you suggested (setting to invite only before inviting anyone) and I can confirm that shows the same behavior.  I also found out additional information on how this is being done.  After person B goes to  "Social", "Friends", "Parties", he selects the party of interest.  When looking at the party members, he chooses the avatar of person A.  Then he clicks "Show Party".  Now he is presented with the "Join Party" option even for an invite only party.  He click this and joins. I had both A and B in my example above try this out individually and they were able to join.  This is definitely a bug and I'm surprised more haven't noticed it.  I know it seems crazy and we think so too.  Thanks for your help.

  • OK, so just to confirm, you start a party and then set it to private. You then invite Friend A to the party. Now Friend B can look at Friend A's profile, select the Party, select Friend A, and join his party, correct? Does your friend have an option for invite only after he joins? What if he selects this options, can Friend B still join? Sorry for all the confusion, it's a little odd for me too, just trying to get the facts straight. Thanks!

  • Yes that is exactly correct. We just had a different friend do exactly the same thing and we didn't even want him in the party at the time.

I am afraid I don't understand your second question "Does your friend have an option for invite only after he joins?".  Would you please elaborate?  This is definiteliy frustrating though because it is defeating the purpose of having an invite-only party.

  • Alright, I was finally able to test this at the office, and we cannot seem to reproduce this issue at all. I wanted to confirm if this issue was happening with any other people, or just when you invite this one friend? For testing, try inviting a different person, preferably someone who doesn't know about this issue, and see if someone can randomly join. Let me know, thanks!

  • I see that this thread is months old but I found it after having this exact problem and doing a search. Both myself and a friend are playing a coop game in a private party. We are both religious about setting status to appear offline, yet suddenly a mutual friend magically appears uninvited in the midst of our party. It was quite unnerving when we suddenly heard his voice. Darn good thing we weren't talking about him at the time!

  • Im just going to throw this out there as a side note, both me and all my friends have their friends list set to "blocked" if for no other reason if "I" do something regardless of how silly it might be to me there are alot of folks that if you dont do what they want lets say or at 1 point a friend who turned into an enemy, so many different ways a person might want to screw with you, well if they want to screw with me thats fine but I try and protect my friends from idiots by blocking it...if friend "A" had his set to blocked and went offline B would never have seen your party. Peace.
