Chatpad must be installed for Kinect Microphone to work?

I've had a chatpad for a good while now and I use it to send messages quickly and for any typing I have to do in-game (changing loadout, character, and/or savegame names). I also use the kinect as my microphone since I don't have a hardwired one. The problem is that I have to have the chatpad(microsoft) installed on my wired controller(microsoft) for the Kinect(microsoft)  to pick up any sound. This problem didn't occur until recently, but I cannot figure out how to correct it. I'm not completely certain, but I think I tuned the kinect microphone(the audio setup) while having the chatpad installed on the controller. Or maybe I had it installed afterwards and didn't immediately realize that having it(the chatpad) installed allowed the kinect microphone to work. I haven't tried my wireless controllers as Player 1 yet because the wired one is my favorite (light, very easy to hold, very comfortable, feels natural).

I've tried re-tuning the kinect microphone without the chatpad installed but to no avail. My only other thought is that it could be either a software issue or that my controller has a short located at or around the chatpad/headset jack/port. I will try using the wireless controllers soon but that isn't a fix, just a work-around. This issue is really bothersome because having the chatpad installed makes the controller heavier and more uncomfortable than the wireless controllers.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? When researched, I found a lot of information on how the kinect chat WILL NOT work with the chatpad installed. My issue is the opposite. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

PS. Don't get me wrong, I like the wireless controllers, too. My wired controller is just that much more comfortable to use.

  • You don't need the chatpad to make it work...

  • Try using the Kinect with Wired and no chatpad if still dont work Get a T8/T9 Screwdriver undo the screws and check around the chatpad area and check for something that could be causing the problem making it short and clean the area if dust or other stuff has got into the pad Hope helps if not HMU and see if can sort something else out !!!

  • Well, after fooling around with it for awhile, it turns out it has to be software related to kinect audio and wired controllers. I re-ran the kinect audio tuning and the kinect can hear me perfectly fine during the tuning using the wired controller and no chatpad. The audio works normally with a wireless controller.

After some consideration of my possible options, I might just keep it that way. This way, I can quickly jump in and out of chat during black ops 2 matches. If I didn't have it that way, I'd find myself constantly having to (via the xbox button) go into the xbox menu and either go to SETTINGS --> PREFERENCES --> VOICE --> MUTE KINECT ------OR------ go to PARTY --> START A PARTY to leave in-game chat. To re-enter in-game chat, the process is repeated. If I leave it the way it is, I can quickly jump in and out of in-game chat simply by connecting or disconnecting the chatpad. I am beginning to prefer this fault because I can control my privacy at a moment's notice, which is important when you have 2 small children and you don't exactly want the hodge podge community of Call of Duty listening in. I know for sure I already hear enough kids on Black Ops 2.....

I'm still going to be looking into the cause of this error and how to fix it, though. It really might just be a bug overlooked by Microsoft, since I doubt many people have wired controllers anymore. Microsoft wired controllers are hard to find, 3rd party ones are not.

PS. Thanks Hidden Drugs for your input! I appreciate the time and effort!

  • Go to settings, then preferences, then make sure the mute kinect is not checked, then go to voice output and click on paly through speakers, that SHOULD clear it right up :) P.s. I have both kinect and a chatpad, and I can use both at the same time
