After fixing online settings and using a different card, I'm now getting the message: "Can't retrieve information from Xbox LIVE. Please try again later. Status code: 80190848" Is there any way I can get it to work now instead of later? Please help :(
It is a possibility. However, the code does mean that purchasing options have been locked for you and you will need to call support and ask to speak with billing about it.

This code suggests that you owe money. Check your billing info at billing.microsoft.com. If it can't be fixed from there, you'll have to call support and ask to speak with billing to get it sorted.
I don't think I owe money because I just added the credit card today. I think it may have to do with the fact that the card expires soon? On Microsoft it says "expiration pending". Does that mean I can't use it anymore?

Thanks. If I go out and buy a card for MS points can I use them to buy a Gold membership? If not, is there any way I can get a 1-month Gold card from the store? I've never seen them, do they exist? I can't afford the 3-month and 12-month cards, I'm a teenager and I'm using limited left-over birthday money hahaha
I don't think stores sell 1 month cards and you can't get gold using points yet that I know of. However, a 3 month or 12 month card is actually cheaper than getting 1 month at a time.

80190848 is a bank authorization issue actually... If you call Support they will tell you the same. They may also require that you verify your e-mail and address that;s on file.

When this happened to me it was due to the bank's anti fraud measures. The payment was being rejected by the bank as it was being processed abroad and 8019808 code was returned for failed payment. A quick call to the bank sorted it out
