Aw: Xbox and Media Centre issues

Hey Roughie, sorry to hear about this issue! Would you mind providing some clarification for us? It sounds like you've worked through our official guide for setting up Media Centre, but that it's failing at some point. What I'm unclear on is the point at which the connection/setup fails exactly. Would you be able to detail the exact issue you're running into for us? :-)

I cant get my WMC to recognize my xbox either. Instead of using WMC you can try using tversity, works better in my opinion.

You say you used the Media Center of Vista previously. Please go to the settings hub on the far right. Then to the console settings in the upper left tile. There choose the Computer setting, and delete the computer (this will delete the downloaded Media Center Extender cached on your console). Then try the Media Center Setup again on the console and PC (the one with the 8-digit number.

You also mention Firewalls. Make sure you only have ONE Firewall running on your PC, namely the Windows built in one. Since you are using a router to connect to the internet, that Router is the only firewall potential hackers see from "outside" your network. So unless you willfully forward incoming ports to your PC on the router, the router is your Firewall that already protects your PC.

Inside your network the Firewall on your PC only keeps away the attacks of your family members.

So, if you use a third party firewall like Norton Internet Security or ZoneAlarm or whatever Firewall besides the Windows internal Firewall is used, disable and uninstall it.

Using a third party Firewall on your PC is just like paying for a bodyguard inside a fortress, when there is an army of "free" (as in beer) bodyguards on patrol around your fortress anyways.

One thing I forgot in my previous answer: To my knowledge, the Xbox 360 doesn't answer to ICMP ping requests anyways. So it's perfectly "normal" that the Xbox doesn't answer to your pings.

@ Mister Fitzer it's failing on trying to find the Xbox. So the very first stage.

@Kiesey78 done that as the first step. I know how to set up media connect, it's failing :( which is why I am on here.

@x24hrslivex Yeah, tried ps3mediaserver but doesn;t work with most media (I usually use mkv files).

@Arnimatorx Already deleted computer etc. Have gone all through the stuff searchable through Google. Have turned off all firewalls temporarily. That's both hardware and software firewalls.

Tbh I've kinda given up on Xbox now and gone back to my streamer. Also discouraged that M$ want people to pay for iPlayer access which is free on every other device. Find it kinda poor that Microsoft's own gaming system doesn't talk properly to it's own operating system??? Other gaming systems do it no problem.

Hey there Roughie, sorry for the slow reply, and thank you for the clarification. I'm curious--how are you PC's network settings configured currently? Is your console set to 'public,' perchance? If so, would you be able to set it to 'private,' to see if that allows you to connect? :-)
